Whenever I try to open Musescore 3 (from the shortcut, .exe file, or command line), the program will get stuck when the loading window says "Loading scores..." and eventually crashes. I am running Windows 10 and the only change I've made recently is attaching a second monitor (it's worth noting that Musescore 3 attempts to open in this new monitor).

So you got MuseScore to run by double clicking a score? If so then try running it from the command line with the -F command line option to revert to factory settings on startup. Note the F must be capital or it won't work.

Wanted to document this slightly more for any developers:

How to Reproduce in 3.6.2 on Win 10

  • SYS INFO: (Win 10 Home; v10.0.19044. i7/16gb ram, Alienware m15 r3)
  • Startup MuseScore 3.6.2. Use template to make a song. (I saved mine in a git repo)
  • Delete the folder/repo or otherwise cause the file/folder to not exist.
  • Start MuseScore again.
  • Suspicion: gets stuck when loading my past projects. Looks for song and there's no error handling.
  • Suggest having a "safe mode" or recovery that does this same thing. Spen ~20 minutes solving as a dev. Hours for end users.
    • Uninstalling/reinstalling doesn't clear this error.

User Workaround

  • Factory reset from command line.
  • USERS: use commands dir, cd to get into wherever you installed MuseScore; when there, run the following command as above users probably did.

Update: Notes on Reproducibility

  • Discard my notes about reproducability; I'm uncertain.
  • It might be reproducible, but I'm lazy and didn't test it again.
