Using Ctrl-K enter A7. It appears as 7 which is most unhelpful. How can I get it to display 2 characters?

score needed, but I guess you're not using the standard chord symbols settings
We can't tell much from just a picture, but my guess is this score was imported from MusicXML or another format. In which case, a known bug in the import facility requires you to save and reload the score after import before chord symbols work properly. Or just change the appearance to Jazz and back to Standard in Format / Style / Chord symbols. See https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/issues/13214

Closing and restarting MuseScore 4 seems to have fixed it. Original was a.mid file which I edited and added chords to.
Closing and reopening the score would probably also have helped
