If I export a musicxml file from a file with contains "cresc....", it is translated into decrescendo (>).
Step to reproduce:
- Create a file with "cresc...……", then export it as musicxml-file.
- Load the just created musicxml file in MuseScore

I can't reproduce - can you attach a specific MusicXML file you are having trouble with?
open the attached mscz, export as MusicXML to get the attacxhed musicxml.
Import that and get a crescendo line, just like it should.

Here is the XML Content:
MuseScore 3.0.5.5992:
wedge type="diminuendo" number="1" default-y="-80.00"
MuseScore 3.2.7498
words font-family="FreeSerif" font-size="12" font-style="italic" default-y="-80.00">cresc.".
Best regards,
Marcel
