Cannot read MuseScore file!!!

• Sep 11, 2016 - 19:18

Hello everyone, I have been working on something in MuseScore for more than a week and suddenly it couldn't open!

I worked on it for more than 2 hours everyday, so it's a lot of work for composing it again!

Please, this is so urgent!

I was so sad once I saw the file not opening...It would be so kind if anyone can help me with any tips on how to return the file back.

My guess is you did something wrong enabling display of hidden files, or you are looking in the folder. Might help to find someone with more computer experience who can work with you in person to help you find the file; it's pretty hard to help you search your computer remotely.

I am not as familiar with Win8 as I wish I were to help you out, but in Win7, there is a directory in Local Disc C://Program Files (x86) in which MuseScore installs itself. Within that MuseScore 2 directory you should find a folder labeled bin, and that is where the program will save files when it does not know where else to save them, as in the case of a crash or some other untoward event.

If Win8 is similar to Win7 in this regard, you might find your missing file there. HTH....

Ali, I looked in that .mscz file, in a binary editor. It's 80 KB of bytes, each with value zero (to a pogrammer 0x00 ) :-( No hope of fixing that.

Anyone seen MS do that before?

Your only hope is to find that backup .mscz, file on your computer... This worked on Windows 10 (yes, I upgraded...):

Open the C:\ drive in Windows Explorer and search using the search box in the upper right. Search using the string "name:*.mcsz," (without the quotes " but with the comma , ). Do NOT replace "name" by the name of your file, but use those exact 4 letters. I do have show hidden blah-blah enabled. You should do that first. Good luck!
