entering text with Musescore

Hi,

Every time I try to enter a text at the beginning of a line on the staff it first enters multiple giberish which has to be erased one after the other to get down to the last one to edit for my desired entry.
That's too bad because I was really getting into enjoying the program. Thanks for any help.
