Everything appears normal, but hitting the "play" button or hitting the spacebar to start playback results in no sound being produced. The little blue highlight moving across the measures still happens, but no sound is produced.
If you are building from source, make sure you do "make install", or if using Xcode, run the "install" scheme, even if you already did that a while ago. I know that I needed to do it again for the master branch and the 2.3 branch right around the time 2.2 was released. This will install the soundfont so that MuseScore can use it.
Workaround: Open Synthesizer and add the default soundfont again or revert to factory settings, loosing all palettes, shortcuts etc... (or manually delete synthesizer.xml)

Most probably a duplicate of #270996: No sound on upgrade to 2.2 if default soundfont was saved as default, see the steps there to get sound back:
