Uninstall New Update

The new update is terrible. It completely butchered the synthesizer sounds. How do I uninstall the update?

You can try to install version 2.1 (or what ever version) after downloading it from here. If it won't replace the newer version then uninstall the newer version through the operating system and install the old version (which will still be on your computer).

Can you explain more detail which sounds you are having problems with? In general, most sounds didn't change at all, and the few that did should be improvements. But FWIW, rather than go back 2.1 and with it the hundreds of bugs that are fixed in the current version you could simply reinstall the old soundfont, FluidR3, which you can get form the Soundfonts section of the Handbook.

The piano sound is also very different. I don't like it. It is a mellow sound, but I feel it lacks adequate brilliance. I'll go back to old version.

Thanks, I'm puzzled by something that's probably very simple.
(1) Background info: Even without installing the old soundfont, it looks like maybe it is still available in the Synthesizer (there is something called FluidR3 GM2-2.SF2, which sounds similar to the "FluidR3" mentioned above). I also installed a Yamaha soundfont (grand-piano-YDP-... .sf2) and added in the synthesizer.
(2) The puzzle is that I don't know how to apply different soundfonts from the synthesizer to get them to do anything. Just clicking on them does nothing but highlight them. It does not seem to matter which soundfont is highlighted--when I go to the mixer the set of choices and the sounds they make are unaffected. Is there something I need to do in the synthesizer to actually apply a given soundfont other than just clicking on it?

Yes. The top soundfont in the list is the one applied by default, so use the buttons to move them around as desired. Then, if there are other sounds loaded you wish to use for particular instruments, go to View / Mixer to choose the sounds for each instrument individually as desired.

BTW, also be sure you are listening through good speakers or headphones when evaluating such things. Typical computer speakers will struggle to reproduce both high and low frequencies and can give misleading results about which sounds are richer or more brilliant than which.

I am not a pianist. I had the same reaction at first listen, but the more I hear it, the more I love it. What I mean: there is an usual time factor to get used to this new sound, which must be taken into account.
I am a guitarist, and I wish I could say the same of the (nylon) guitar ... :(
