Is it possible to create a mid-staff instrument change with out it affecting the instrument name?

When I go into the master palate and select the instrument change feature, when I select the instrument I want to change the original instrument name is replaced by the new instrument name. I was wondering if there's a way to switch the instruments but keep the original name?

I don't think you are doing it correctly. Use the Instrument change from the text, then right click the same text and choose "Change instrument..." to change the instrument. You can edit "Instrument" so it has any text you want. This is the only place anything but the original instrument's name exists. The staves still show the original instrument names.

If you mean you want "Bass Trombone" to say "Trombone 1" then you can double click the name and edit the text. On the next page double click the "B. Tbn" and change the text to "Tbn. 1" and it will appear on all subsequent pages.

As others have mentioned, it appears you are using the midstaff change incorrectly. It is literally meant for changes mid0staff - like if the first trombone player is supposed to put down his instrument half way through the piece and pick up a bass trombone. It makes no sense to use this on the first measure of a piece. I suspect you really should be simply changing the instrument with Staff Properties. But perhaps you could clarify - what is it you are actually trying to accomplish here? How many trombone players are you trying to write for, and are any of them supposed to lay down their horns and pick up a new one part way through the piece?
