Breve
Maybe I miss something, but is this kind of breve (double whole note) implemented in MuseScore?

apparently not (only by Master Palette)?

Yep, found it inside the master palette, thanks a lot.
But because it's a common symbol of breve, I wonder, if it's maybe worth to add this symbol to the settings of the inspector (?).

I think so, Wikipedia says
Left: breve in modern notation. Centre: breve in mensural notation used in some modern scores as well. Right: less common stylistic variant of the first form.
But as you know I don't know music...

I'm sure it isn't true, that you haven’t knowledge about music ;-).

I'm sure it's just as simple, and recognisable, and correct, to simply use two tied semibreves?

In modern notation yes though I have seen the longas in classical scores. In older notation you will see whole notes tied when the note spans a measure.

I cannot apply the brevis to a work in 4/2. Although it is in a Baroque style (fugue) would the tied whole notes be acceptable?

A brevis should work in 4/2. If not, the score is needed to check why

Perhaps add it to the noteheads palette as Alt. Brevis 2 or something?

That's the question. The other symbols of breve you can adjust via inspector. Maybe it would be good to have the same place for this symbol (in sense of usability?).

Sorry, I omitted a thought. The same noteheads in the palette are listed in the inspector.
Maybe I don't understand correctly what you want, but you can change the musical symbols font (in Style -> General...) to Bravura or Gonville to get the breve with a double line.
On top of what has been said so far: The 3rd is the default in Emmentaler (the 1st the default in Bravura and Gonville), the 2nd is possible, change notehead group to "Alt. brevis"
