Connecting Barlines?
So I’m trying to make a few scales and want them to be connected with a curvy bracket for choosing a one octave or two octave scale. I’ve tried double clicking a barline to go into edit mode and dragging it down, but it doesn’t work and just goes back into where it was before. I’ve tried this with and without the bracket and looking at the bracket handbook but it doesn’t work.

Whether or not you use brackts is entirely unrelated to whether to use long barlines (although those often go together) .
See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/barlines#connect-barlines on how to change the barlines

I’ve tried doing what the handbook says for connecting barlines. It does not allow me to drag anything and have it connect together as it says. I know how to according to the handbook, but it doesn’t work.

Can you attach the score you're having that problem with?
It sounds like you are trying to extend the barline correctly. There is an issue with invisible staves. If you try to extend a barline over an invisible staff it will do what you say.

I’m not sure what an invisible staff is and I’m also not quite sure what you mean by that?

A staff holds to music and goes from the left side of the page to another. So in a multi part score, the Flute part will be one staff. A staff can be made invisible in two way. One is to remove the Visible check mark in the instruments dialog (opens by pressing i). The other way to make a staff invisible is to use the menu Style->General... and check "Hide empty staves" and the staff will be invisible if there are no notes on it.
As mentioned, attaching your score would help us understand and assist better. But my guess is, you have only a single staff, so there is no way to extend the barline to the next staff. You need to actually have multiple staves to extend barlines. I think you probably have only a single staff, with each scale coming one after the other, rather than multiple staves, with the scales happening simultaneously. If so, you need to add more staves with Edit / Instruments and write you other scales on those staves. Again, though, without seeing your score, all we can do is guess.

Well, with only a single sfaff you won't be able to add a brace spanning more than one.
