Symbols not responding in Master Palette

• Nov 13, 2018 - 15:00

Hello fellow songwriters
I am rather concerned that the “symbols” in the Master Palette menu are not responding; I cannot apply flat or sharp signs to the chord names, entered above the bars. This will inevitably cause further problems, when I need to transpose the score.
The process I used is as follows:
View>>Master Palette>>Symbols>>highlight flat/sharp symbol>>double-click right of ‘B’ figure above bar 24>>double-click flat sign; no response. Bar 24 should begin with a B-flat chord and bar 26, with A-flat progressing to E-flat.
This is the first time I’ve encountered this problem, since upgrading and would be grateful for suggestions. Vocal part attached.
Many thanks
Anna Maria

There is no need to use a palette to add symbols to chords. To get a flat type b at the appropriate spot, for a sharp press #. There is no transposable natural sign but you can type the word "natural" to get a natural sign in some places. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/chord-symbols#enter-chord-symbol for more info.

Edit: FYI, the Chord entry function does not recognize the symbols in the master palette when they are entered since it is unnecessary to use them.

Chord symbols are very special; they are the only type of text that MuseScore needs to "understand" in order to display correct or to transpose or to export to MusicXML, etc. So lots of things are unique about them, including the convenient shortcuts of being able to use "b" and "#" as aliases for flat and sharp, since it can be understood from the context. Other text needs to treat "b and "#" as "b" and "#" of course, so you have to fall back on use of the Special Characters palette to add flat and sharp, should the need to arise (which it does a lot less often). Since other text doesn't need to be displayed in special ways like chord symbols, nor do they need to be transposed, nor do they need special treatment for MusicXML, there is nothing they need to "respond" to.
