Creating a long diagonal arrow on Musescore 2.1?

• Nov 30, 2018 - 18:40

I've been browsing through some forum posts regarding this feature but haven't come up with any solution to this issue: I want to add an arrow which I can resize and adjust to my needs. The arrows in the ¨symbols¨ section of the master palette cannot be re-sized or re-shaped. I want to create something like what I'm showing in the images attached (from Berg's violin concerto). Do you have any suggestions on how to go about something like that on Musescore? Thanks in advance.

Ciao Shoichi...!!

A 'How to' or a feature request sounds like a good idea, but a 'How to' requires precise steps.
I have looked at the precedents and concluded that a one piece line attached to the arrow is better than this:

The image above was from the 'MiguelTest.mscz' attachment from here:

A one piece arrow is easier to drag around (up, down, left, right) without breaking apart..

So... I took your 'Test.mscz' file from here:

...and modified the line/arrow.

Here's the MuseScore file:

For the mscz file attached above, you can open the line properties to discover the text (symbol) that I used.
It is the 'Black arrow right (E)' from the Musical Symbols tab of the Special Characters (F2) window. I did not use the 'arrowhead' symbol, because I wanted to align (by overlapping) the arrow head to the line; and to give it a uniform thickness. You can also see the offsets and the font size in the (arrowBlackRight) symbol's Text Properties.

Finally, I was able to add the line into my custom 'Lines' palette; and it seems to work ok when placing into a score.

BUT ...and this is a big one:
Tilting (allow diagonal) does not work... :-(
So, for a different direction, a new line must be created for a new compass point (and strictly limited to N,NE,E, SE, S, etc...).

Regards.

In my current experiments, it seems that only horizontal lines with a right facing arrow behave properly.
Horizontal lines with a left arrow display a stubborn gap between the arrow and the line... and though they can be dragged freely, I am unable to save to a custom palette.

Diagonal lines with arrows can also be created. Unfortunately, in line edit mode, the handles cannot be dragged to lengthen or shorten the line without bad results. (They can only be created for a fixed length.)
Diagonals are nearly impossible to save to a custom palette. Even if you manage to get them in the plaette, they lose the diagonal trait -- i.e. when entered into the score from the palette, the 'allow diagonal' is no longer checked in the Inspector.

Vertical lines with down arrow behave ok when moved, but since they need the 'Allow diagonal' trait, they do not work well in the palette.
Vertical lines with up arrow - I haven't looked at. I have to leave.

Here, you can play with this file: Line_Test_62c.mscz

Ciao.

Ideally, I was trying to make a 'draggable' line with an attached arrowhead (on either or both ends) and have it be adjustable with regards to both length and orientation.

Your line + black arrowhead down-right (SE) is 2 pieces so it separates upon dragging and when changing orientation.
By comparison, click and drag the line which states: 'Cannot be made longer/shorter'. It moves as one piece, but is still lacking in other respects.

Also, your arrow image does work for dragging, but cannot be modified with respect to orientation and length.

The best line from what I've discovered so far, is that a horizontal line with an attached right facing arrow (E) can be dragged; and its length can be adjusted. It can be saved into the palette. However, the line's orientation cannot be easily changed.

Regards.
