I concur.
Workaround: Make them invisible with a V.
I don't see code to handle this at all. I wonder, should unchecking this disable all barlines (including double bars, repeats etc) or just the default ones?

In version 2 it affects all but the starting bar line (which I think is good). Otherwise I think it should only affect normal bar lines so users can have the option of other lines if needed.
FWIW it's easy to make this option work when first loading a score, harder (or more dangerous) to get it remove the barlines once they've already been generated. I'll let someone else look at that, barline code is very touchy.
I do not have the ability to comment on this from a coding perspective. Removing all barlines in staff properties works great in version 2, but has no effect in the version 3 beta. I just thought it was bug that could be addressed.
It is, but not by me at this particular time. Leaving it open for someone else to look.
