Musical score layout on new musescore 3

• Dec 25, 2018 - 14:45

Hi there! I just downloaded the new musescore 3 and I opened with it my scores made with the older 2.3.2 version .The sores are for full orchestra and chorus. The result was terrifying! The pages were partly displayed ( hiding the lines of some instruments) they were unequally displaced ( others taller others shorter) and it was showing like if that the files of 2.3.2 couldn't be properly read by the new version! Also the stuff on the surrounding page ( they grey margins with the notes etc above the score) where HUGE! I uninstalled the new version and ( fortunatelly) the older was still working....Since I need the scores to be perfect to be given soon to the musicians,do you have any ideas what happened or I should never install the new version ? Thanks a lot MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

Versions 2 and 3 can run on your computer at the same time, so there was no reason to uninstall version 3.

The best thing to do is to attach your score that looked so bad in version 3 here. Use the Choose file button below and attach the .mscz file so we can see what happens during import.

I wanted to see if you had properly entered items into the version 2 score. The answer is no. That is what you are seeing when you import the score to version 3.

There are things that a lot of people do that may cause problems with display in version 2 and will cause display problems in version 3. These mostly have to do with slurs and hairpins (decrescendos).

When you enter them you need to select the first and last note where they are being applied, then apply the item either using a shortcut or double clicking it in the palette. With multiple voices as is in most of your score, you need to click one end of the slur/haripin and ctrl+click the other end. This will make the hairpin work properly on all of the applied notes and the slurs will mostly look good without needing to further adjust them. It will also assure slurs are in the correct voice. Measure 1 of the flute has two slurs in voice 2 and version 3 is quite confused by this.

If you need to extend them to another note, always use shift+arrows to do this. Using ctrl+arrows or dragging them makes them look ok, but MuseScore still thinks they are attached to the original notes.

The reason I know this is that I double click the item. The right end anchor has a red line drawn to where MuseScore says the item extends to. When I click the left end I see the red line anchor where Musescore says it starts. Entering them the way you did has caused MuseScore 3 to try to make it look right with the strange anchor points. It will never make it look quite right.

For the auto placement to work, you need the slurs and hairpins entered correctly. This also applies to other lines as well. I only looked at the first two pages of music.

Wow! I didnt know...Thanks a lot Mike.Well ,I`m not sure if I can correct now the partitures since they have many slurs and hairpins ,all of them put in the wrong way!At least they look good in the 2.3.2 version and it will be not a problem for the real musicians to understand!Have a lovely New Year ,thanks a lot!

Hi Mike! Thanks to your advice I corrected as many slurs\haripins I could find wrong. The problem is not fixed and also I have a new one! The pdf ( partiture not parts) doesnt display correctly! It shows the page cut. This doesnt appeal to the same partiture as it downloads as Parts pdf.Everything is Ok there.I attach the files in case you have any ideas why. Thanks a lot

The problem with your PDF is that you have made the score a custom size of 215.9mm x 362.4mm then printed the score on A4 paper which is much smaller (210.06mm x 296.3mm). You need to set both the score paper size and printed paper size the same or if your Print to PDF (in the print menu, not export) gives the option of shrink to fit, select that option.

When you put the score into the PDF, it used A4 paper for the PDF. If you use Export to PDF, only your printer defaults will be used for the paper size. If you use Print and choose a PDF printer, you have more options, so you can either adjust the paper size or tell the MuseScore to shrink the page to fit your printed page.

The best way to fix this is to open Layout->Page settings and select A4 as the paper when you are viewing the score. You may have accidentally changed this in the past.

Keep both versions installed (or even all 3) and use right click / open with if you want it openedwith MuseScore 2 (or 1).
But yes, 2.x scores will render differently in 3.0 and esp. manually changed positions may look bad and requires some work on the layout. Same as it was back when 2.0 got released and imported 1.x scores

Thanks Jojo-Schmitz! I will try.Do you think that if I first downloaded from the beginning the files from my internet musescore page to the " scores" file of musescore 3 in my PC and then try to open them with musescore 3 would help? Cause I opened the scores already stored in my PC in the file " scores" of version 2.3.2 using the new version

There is no " scores" file in either MuseScore 2.x nor 3.0. There is a "Scores" folder or directory in the folder "MuseScore2" resp. "MuseScore3" directory under "My Documents" though.
You can open 2.x scores with 3.0, but not vice versa, So if you open a 2.x score with 3.0, you should save it at a dufferent place or under a different name (and MuseScore will warn you of you don't).
Whether you open files stored locally or downloaded from the internet is pretty irrelevant here.
