Today I wanted to continue writing a piece of music I've started on. As to my surprise, the file was damaged. I have read the page where it explains how to fix it, but it doesn't seem to work for me. Is there anyone who can get me started?

It seems you applied a 1/4 timesig to the entire score while really wanting a 1/4 pickup measure in a 4/4 score.
This case and it's cure indeed is not described in the howto. so here's what I did: I added a 4/4 timesig to the 2nd measure, then to the 1st measure, than change the 1st measure to have an actual diration oa 1/4 and not get counted. Save, closed MuseScore (just as a safety measure really), reopened the score (no corruption reported anymore), delete the 4/4 timesing in measure 2, save, closed MuseScore (again a safety measure, when working with corrupted scores) reopned and still no corruption reported

Hi Jojo, I did read the page you sent in your other comment and also got the entire info thingy, but it didn't really work out. However now you say the 1/4 timesig is applied to the entire score. I didn't notice that before. I'll go and try it again now. Thanks a lot!

Well, it is only half way applied somehow, that is the corruption.
I wonder whether you can come up with steps to reproduce this from scratch, if so we may be able to find and fix a bug

This score was created with version 2.1. And this the manifestation of this issue, fixed since a while now:
#152506: Introduce a time signature in a measure which the Actual duration is exactly identical leads to corruption/crash

I do not think the version is the problem, because I have opened and closed it in 2.1 a few times now. (I still use 2.1, because I feel comfortable with it. I know, I'm weird :) )

OK, still 2.1 is the possible culprit for that corruption. And you should really update to 2.3.2 and possibly consider installing 3.0 also.
2.3.2 should be very similar to 2.1, except in a few corners. And without a whole bunch of bugs, like the one at hand here

Okay, I've updated to 3.0 - because why not go all the way. It has offered me to repair it, but it only moved the location of the tempo markings, crescendos, etc. a little up.
