Open a Musescore 3 file with Musecore 2?

• Mar 13, 2019 - 22:28

Dear all,
I downloaded Musescore 3.03 and was happy when I discovered the new features.
Unfortunately it kept shutting down every time I typed 5 bars or so (SATB + Piano), and did not save my work even though I clicked save after each bar. So after a few weeks I decided to go back to version 2.3.2, which worked fine enough for me and still does. I don't think I'll try version 3 again any time soon.
Now when I want to open a file I've created in 3.03 with 2.3.2, I have a message saying that I need a version 3 to open a 3 file.
My question: Is there a way to open a 3 file with a 2 version?
Thank you,

No, file being incompatible due to the massive changes is the reason for changing the major version number.
You can open musescore3 files with musescore3 (use the just released 3.0.5, it's way faster in page view) and export to musicxml.
That musicxml can then be opened in musescore 2.

I believe you mean file extension rather than shortcut.
According to the current specification it is .musicxml (which is what MuseScore uses). Older versions used the more generic .xml. You might have to rename a .musicxml file to become plain .xml for older programs to be able to open it there.

If you pressed Save, your work is saved. Most likely there is some confusion about which folder it saved to, and you were trying to open an older version of the file in another folder. I'd focus on sorting that out before giving up. And then if you find it ever crashes again, please report the problem here, attaching your score and steps to reproduce.
