But problem solved: it was a keyboard problem! I'm using a Microsoft keyboard that has - I just now figured out - an "F lock" key which toggles between 2 functions. For ex, F12 is the Print key if F Lock is toggled on, or works as F12 if toggled off.

Which version are you using? Which operating system? Are the shortcuts defined properly in Edit->Preferences->Shortcuts?
"View Mode" ? - Ctr+Shift+V.
