Unsync orchestral parts from the score and each other

• Jun 1, 2019 - 22:09

I'm constructing the score and parts of Beethoven's Mass in C. The full (i.e conductor's) score needs each of the double wind and brass instruments (e.g. oboes, horns, trumpets) entered on the same stave, using Voice 1 for the first part and Voice 2 for the second. But the parts obviously need to be individual parts, so (e.g.) the first and second oboe music on separate files.

Using the two oboes as an example, the only way I've found of doing this is to enter the two parts on the same stave in the orchestral score, then create the Oboe 1 and Oboe 2 parts separately, using the combined parts from the orchestral score for both, then manually delete the second and first oboe parts from each as appropriate. However, when I try to do this, it turns out that the parts and the score are all synced, so that when I make a change in, say, the Oboe 1 part, it changes not only the Oboe 2 part but the combined oboe parts in the full score as well.

Is there a way of unsyncing each part once I have created the separate instrumental parts, so that I can work on (say) the Oboe 1 part without changing Oboe 2 or the full score?

Alternatively, and more fundamentally, have I concocted the most horrendously complex procedure, when there's actually a far simpler way of doing it?

But... Why?

Why not to use MuseScore "Voices" only? ???

Starting in version 3, when you use File->Parts you can do what you want.

Put oboe 1 in voice 1 and oboe 2 in voice 2.
Create the part by clicking new
Change the name of the part from part (n)
Click the instrument (Oboe in this example) in the box on the left and click +
Click the triangle in the square on the right
All 4 voices will be checked by default, check only the voice for that part.

Note: There is currently no way to tell MuseScore that a part is unison and should be included with both voices 1 & 2, so everything you want in the Oboe 2 part must be in voice 2.

Well, you definitely make it harder by combining the two parts onto one staff in the score. I mean, I know music is often published that way, but it's easier if you don't, so if you don't have to, I wouldn't.

That said, if you do decide this is worth the trouble, you have a couple of options. MuseScore does support automatically creating parts from voices on a staff - see the controls at the bottom of the parts dialog. But there are some known limitations with this that make it not a viable option for complex scores. So instead, I'd recommend adding two new staves for the individual parts, copying in the content from the combined staff, removing the unneeded voice form each, and making them invisible in the score. You'll have update them separately from the combined staff, but that's pretty much what you're asking for anyhow.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll adopt Marc's solution. As to why I need to have the parts combined in the full score - as the conductor, I know that reading one stave containing two parts is easier to see at a glance when I'm conducting than two staves is. Of course, this means that a full early Romantic orchestral score would consist of six rather than twelve double wind/brass parts (flute/oboe/clarinet/bassoon/trumpet/horn) on each page (assuming, of course, that the music for each part isn't distinctive enough to necessitate its own stave, which Beethoven's for the most part aren't). Orientation is thus an order of magnitude easier.

Again, many thanks to everyone for their suggestions, and happy Musescoring with this truly wonderful resource!!
