I keep getting an error each time I try to input a note for the tuplet

I can see from your screenshot that you are in Insert mode. I don't know if you meant to do that or not, but you are in effect telling MuseScore that you wish to insert beats in the middle of a tuplet. I doubt that this is what you are really trying to do, and MuseScore is telling you that this is not possible. You want to go back into Step-Time (Default) input mode. Then you will be able to add notes inside the tuplet.
