Static Soundfont
I want to have a static soundfont, but I can't find any static (on purpose) soundfonts. And when I try to search for "static soundfont" I always see complaints about how people get static playback (not what I was looking for)
Does anyone know a good static soundfont?
Comments
Forget it. I had thought of audio noise (My multitasking is gone).
What on earth is a "static soundfount"?
Am I understanding correctly that you want a SoundFont that sounds like white noise?
I did a Google search and found White Noise SFX, which comes with an SFZ file that you should be able to use with MuseScore.

Well, I did all of the necessary steps for installing it from the MuseScore Handbook, but the .sfz file isn't working. MuseScore says it's unreadable and that it's an unknown type.

I just downloaded it and tested it on my end, and it worked fine.
What are the exact steps that you're following? You should be following the steps documented here.

I am using what you just linked me, and I followed the necessary steps.
Quote from the guide:
After finding and decompressing a SoundFont, double-click to open it. In most cases, the SoundFont file type will already be associated with MuseScore, and (this is where it stops working) MuseScore will start and a dialog will appear asking if you want to install the SoundFont.
The dialog that appeared said that the .sfz file was unreadable and that I couldn't use it. I don't know what the problem is. This is my first time installing a soundfont. I asked for help from my brother (he's installed soundfonts before) and he couldn't figure it out either. Nobody else in my family uses MuseScore, so I can't ask for help from them.

Did MuseScore open when you double-clicked the SFZ file? If not, some other program must have set up its own associations. You'll have to use the other method for installing, go to View / Synthesizer / Zerberus and add it there.

MuseScore does open when I double click it, but it gives the error message:
Cannot read file /home/(my user directory)/Documents/MuseScore3/White Noise Soundfont (The folder of my choice)/#99S010 White Noise SFX/Samples/White Noise SFX.sfz:
unknown type
And when I try to use View/Synthesizer/Zerberus and I press "add" There's nothing to load.

Try removing the hash from the folder path.

Do you mean the folder name? (I'm not sure what "folder path" means, which may or may not be a bad thing)
In reply to Do you mean the folder name?… by littleguyburg
Yes.
The "path" is the succession chain of all folders leading up to that specific location.

That's the wrong folder. You have to install the soundfont to your actual SoundFonts folder. You can create a subfolder under that if you like.

From that same guide, just a bit down: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfonts-and-sfz-files#install-sfz
SFZ is not technically a "soundfont" as in, it doesn't use the soundfont file format (sf2/sf3). Double clicking only works for those, not for the SFZs.

I've done everything in that guide, but the sfz file is "unreadable."

So, you went to View / Synthesizer / Zerberus, pressed the Add button, and selected the SFZ file? Did you get the message immediately, or only after closing the dialog? Could be the download got corrupted.

99S010_White_Noise_SFX.zip
file into your MuseScore SoundFonts folder (e.g.,/home/[username]/Documents/MuseScore3/SoundFonts

. (You may rename this subfolder to justWhite Noise SFX
or whatever you want, but you don't have to.)In reply to Unzip 99S010_White_Noise_SFX… by Spire42

I had a similar problem with another soundfont. All I had to do was rename the file extension to .sf2, and then it worked.

That won't change the soundfont's format at all.

Well, I haven't actually tried using it, I think. Is there a way I can convert it to a format MuseScore supports?

Depends on the soundfont, but sure, there are almost certainly tools others have developed to convert certain soundfont formats into others. You'd have to do web searches to find more info about those.

Okay, thanks. Why doesn't MuseScore support .sfz files?
