To add a functional ritardando, add the system text then add tempo changes and make them invisible. There is a plugin that automates entering the invisible tempos. See the manual if you need info on using plugins.

i tried typing the ritardando in and putting a slower tempo at the beginning of the next measure and it doesn't seem to be working

Attach the score that shows the problem, at least a minimal example.
For the functional ritardando you have to use the "Tempo Changes" Plugin.
Once installed, select the region you want to apply the ritardando, then go to the "Plugins" tab and select "TempoChanges" (while selected).
There you have the plugin's menu, and you have to select the values in a format of "From - To" in BPM, and the note type of reference.

The plugin is not required but it does make it much easier.
