Unable to playback audio or use synthesiser, options greyed out

This issue occurred seemingly randomly, but now happens every time I open the program.
I am running MuseScore v3.6.2 on MacOS Big Sur v11.4 (with an M1chip).

The problem is that the options to playback a piece and use the synthesiser are "greyed out" and not functional. I've tried changing my system sound outputs between headphones, built-in speakers and virtual speakers. I don't use a MIDI device.

I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, and restoring it to factory settings using the terminal command:
/Applications/MuseScore\ 3.app/Contents/MacOS/mscore -F
