hiding a staff in part of a xcore

I'm notating a complex piano score. I want to use 3 staves to make the voicing more clear. But I only want to use three staves some of the time. I can't figure out how to make the empty score invisible part of the time. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks in advance for thinking about this.
