Choosing Tablature Type for Mandolin

• May 3, 2022 - 16:38

When adding a linked staff to a new “Standard” score for mandolin, I find an array of other formats, including:

 Tab. 4-str. Simple
 Tab. 4-str. Common
 Tab. 4-str. Full
 Custom Tablature

What are the differences among these four formats?

Copy and paste from the handbook:

  1. Select a tablature type from the drop-down list under "Staff Type" in the right-hand pane:
    • Simple: Displays fretmarks only. Best for staff/tablature systems.
    • Common: Displays fretmarks, note stems and beams.
    • Full: Displays fretmarks, enhanced note stems, beams, and rests.
    • Italian/French: Historical tablature options for the lute.

Your attachment is just a screenshot and does not explain why you do not find the description that Jojo pasted to be good enough. You ask "What are the differences among these four formats?" and the handbook answers. Why are you not happy with this answer? Do you actually have a different question that we should have guessed?

Note that staff "type" is an umbrella term, and occasionally a misnomer. Whichever you choose (Simple, Common, Full) the staff type is tablature.

Simple, Common, Full are actually pre-packaged style settings that control which symbols display on the tablature staff.

Fortunately after chosing a pre-packaged style we can modify properties in Staff Properties>Advanced, largely in the Fret Values and Note Values tabs.
