Set up a playback loop over a number of measures, in the usual manner. Play it to check it is as intended.

Select any measure (inside or outside of the loop) by clicking within the measure.

Now execute the playback button again. The result is that the playback repeats just the new measure that has been selected instead of remembering the original range of measures.

This is by design - the loop responds to range selections, thus making it simple to loop any range just by selecting it.

Well, it certainly doesn't suit my needs, so I guess I'm asking for a change in design; so that the playback loop is retained by the system as a separate entity, freeing it from the current selection. I appreciate this might mean a fairly substantial change to the software.

Indeed, for some workflows, the current behavior is not ideal. It would be pretty trivial to implement a way to disassociate loop from selection; the trick is in designing a solution that works feels natural for everyone.
