Interesting. Anyone have any insight into what may be going on? My keybaord is US standard / QWERTY. I've done a reset to factory settings, no change. I haven't found where in the code "Space" is intercepted for lyric entry.
Turns out it is a setting in xfce somewhere, something to do with Ibus & switching keyboard input methods or something. Disabled it and now ctrl+space works :-)

Works in KUbuntu 13.04. Tested on standard english, esperanto, kazakh and russian qwerty layout. Commit 1514034.
