So we are not talking about the MuseScore "Navigator" but the list of folders at the left of the "File / Open" (and similar) dialogs?
I can confirm this as well, on one of my two Linux systems, The other works. Miwarre and I were discussing this on IRC, and he pointed out two other probably relevant things: the icons at top right for Parent Directory, New Folder etc are also missing.

What is "dead"? Can you provide a screenshot?
it is impossible to navigate. For instance in the save as command (attached) click on «leleu» doesn't select it.
Also impossible an image file to drop it in a frame
However I succeeded to open files I was in need of by listing them in the «last files» section of musescore.ini
Is this behavior new? You didn't get it with a previous build? Which one?
Could it be a problem with your system? You did an upgrade recently?
I checked 2e61d6b of sept 2 which is OK
I have almost all daily compilations from then to now.
Should I spot the exact date?
By the way the bug is also present on my Lubuntu 14.04 32 bits
I can reproduce the bug under Linux Mint 17.
After a "git bisect" (great tool, btw) I pinned down the problem to this commit:
https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/commit/f6b641f49e62e201b230cf870…
"add icons for message dialogs"
The error from "mscore -d" is a series of:
QPixmap::scaleWidth: Pixmap is a null pixmap
