XML import
I was sent an xml file. When I opened it in MSS 4.5.2, it showed eighths grouped in 4 (4/4 time signature) and rests in two voices split.
I copied the file into my barbershop template, which has eighths grouped in 2 (a custom C, set to group in 2,) and rests to be overlapped. But it came in with the same configuration as the original. I can edit the items; no problem. But I thought my template settings would correct them. Is this not the case, and, why not?
Comments
Probably the grouping is encoded in the XML and as sich taken by MuseScore, being non-standard. And staying that way on copy/paste.
Use Ctrl+A, then in the Beaming palette select the Automatic beaming icon
Because probably the template settings affects newly inserted notes only. Copied/Pasted notes already come with all properties set (value, pitch, stem etc.).
There is no other option than changing the affected notes.
Well, this is distressing. Neither solution works. I tried Staff/Part Properties to Merge Matching Rests, and Time Signature Properties to break the beams.
Score attached. Any comments welcome!

Are you expecting something like this, or not? 1For Good - TTBB - BHS copy.mscz
EDIT : the same file, but I had forgotten about matching rests: 3For Good - TTBB - BHS copy.mscz

Yes, beaming is correct. Matching rests are fine in the treble staff, but not in the bass. What did you do, that I didn't?
Many thanks!!

What measure number is this?

Found it. Measure 7. No, it's okay, it's in the second attached file, 3.For Good... (that's why I made an EDIT, realizing I had forgotten something).

My bad, I missed the #3 edit. Yes, that's fine. How?

Okay. I'll explain soon.

I'm back. So:
1. Get into the habit with these MusicXML files to do the following: Select all (Cmd + A), then go to menu "Format" / "Reset Beams " AND "Reset shapes and positions" (this is why the Matching Rests feature was not working, as you noticed.)
I prefer, and just in case: save your score, and reopen it.
2. The difficulty with your score is that it contains several changes in time signatures, 4/4 vs. 2/4. It would be too tedious to change the beaming of each 4/4 time signature.
The quickest way is to create a custom time signature, a "new" 4/4 with the beaming as you want it (every 2 eighth notes), and will be added to your palette (it will be the last one by default)
I think you know how to do it. But as a reminder: https://handbook.musescore.org/notation/rhythm-meter-and-measures/time-… and https://handbook.musescore.org/notation/rhythm-meter-and-measures/beams…
3. Now select the 4/4 time signatures in your score and apply the custom time signature to them. You will need to do this a few times in the score, but it is very quick (I would have hoped that the feature Select / More / Same sub-type: 4/4 would suffice, but apparently not)
4. Finally, use the "Matching rests" function in the Staff/Part Properties (EDIT: or better/quicker, tick "Merge matching rests" in Format / Style / Rests)
The GIF below illustrates points 3 and 4.

Thanks, many times over. This has been copied, and added to the Big Book O' Stuff.
Once I grasp the concept, the solution is right there.
