Isn't it common practice for a program to remember the directory you last opened a file from during the current session rather than always going back to a pre-defined directory when you go to load another file?

The Nightly build i am trying our now doesn't do that.

Is there something unusual about the Desktop folder n this computer - like it's on a different drive, perhaps a network share, something like that? Do you see the same behavior when opening files in other "normal" folders? I notice that in the pane on the left side of the file dialog, what is highlighted does not seem to be your Scores folder, even though the Scores folder is what is shown at the top. This is what makes me wonder if there is something funny about your folder structure.

For the record, on my Windows 7 system, I can open a file from the desktop folder, then on a subsequent open, it starts there. So the problem is not that the desktop folder is always special (even though it probably *is* special); I beleive it is something unique to your system.

BTW, it is normal that saving doesn't go to the folder where opening came from. The info about last-used folders is maintained separately for the open and save dialogs. So opens go to the last-used folder for open, saves go to the last-used folder for save. Works fine for me on both Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

Huh, something else strange I noticed about the file dialog in your video - your home directory as shown in the top of the dialog is under Favorites. Perhaps that too has something to do with it., That's not the normal location. This could also have somethingg to do with it.

My OS is on my C: drive on an SSD. There's nothing that I have done to make my Desktop anything other than what it typically is in Windows.

MuseScore is running from a folder on the Desktop that the .7z archive was unzipped to.

It doesn't matter where the file I want to use is, the same behavior happens if I navigate to a folder on my usual data drive, my E: drive.

IF that is wrong that is a wrong created by MuseScore because what you are seeing is MuseScore being run immediately after being unzipped to the hard drive. It is in all defaults..

I'll note that I said "common practice". It IS common practice for the most recently used folder to be remembered, somehow, at least during the current session. I can't think of any other program i use that doesn't do that.

Please read my last statement again. I agree it is common practice for opening to go to the same fodler from which a file was last oepned, and on all system but yours apparently, it does. So I am trying to udnerstand what makes your system unique. What I wrote in the BTW is that *saving* does not necessarily go to the last *open* folder - these are managed separated in MuseScore, and indeed in many programs in my experience.

Anyhow, it still seems something is fishy with the inclusion of Favorites in the path to your documents folder. This would not be something MuseScore is doing on its own; this would have to do with your system configuation. Probably something about how you set things up to put your Documents folder on the E drive rather than C. Windows supports this, but only poorly, and there are definitely bugs with how it works. Especially if you are also involving "Libraries". So I am guessing this has a lot to do with the issue.

If you open your "My Documents" folder in some other program, does it also show as being underneath "Favorites"? What about Desktop? What are the full paths reported to each of these folders?

I never use "My Documents." I haven't moved it anywhere. It is where Windows installed it when I put Windows on this computer, on the C: drive.

My E: drive is where I typically put my own data so that it will not be on the same drive as my OS. I haven't moved any part of the OS there.

As an experiment, I have moved the nightly build folder to my E: drive and run MuseScore from there and then edited the "scores folder" path to be

E:/ArchDrive/music/Flute/Altes MIDIs

That is a plain vanilla path to a folder on the E: drive

Now MuseScore always returns to that folder when I go to Open a file, even if i have Opened a file previously from some other location.

What ever issue "Favorites" or "My Documents" was, it shouldn't be an issue anymore with this new path.
