Mute TAB line in staff/TAB system?

• Jun 26, 2015 - 12:54

See attached file:

There does not appear to be any way to mute the TAB line in the attached file. The mixer only shows one instrument and this is controlling playback of both staff and TAB. There needs to be independent control for both lines.

The problem is that it is not uncommon for TAB notation to be different from staff: in this case the TAB is showing fret harmonic positions which play differently to the treble staff. In other cases, for example, you may want to show ornaments in the treble staff, but write them out in full in the TAB. So you don't want the TAB sounding as well as the Staff!

In 2.0.1, in this configuration, std staff + tab, the tab is always played (not the standard). You can't do anything about it except maybe reverse them and you don't want to? or add a new instrument, notate whatever the playback should be, hide it, and mute the guitar instrument... (I don't advise this...)

In 2.0.2, only the standard staff will be played and so it should work as you want.

"In 2.0.1, in this configuration, std staff + tab, the tab is always played (not the standard)."

That can't be true because the staff line plays back even when the TAB is empty. Another curious thing. You can clearly hear a chord (fourth interval) in bar 1 where none is indicated in TAB, which indicates that both lines are playing back together! (I am using MS 2.0.1).

Is it possible to consider allowing playback of either line at the users discretion, but with standard staff as the default.

So in the case of non-linked Staff/Tab (in the same grand staff) both lines are played back, yet only one line is showing in the mixer!

There should be two lines in the mixer with one muted by default, but allowing the user to mute one or the other as required.

The problem with this workaround is that although it appears like a "Grand Staff", the user loses the "great stave distance" option (in the style>page window). So s/he can't adjust staff distance independently of other staves in the score.

It would be easier if both staff and tab instruments (of the Grand Staff) were available in the mixer so that either one could be selected for playback. Feature request?

There is always a way...

If it's about the whole score, like the grand staff distance, sure, there is a way. Shift drag a measure of the second instrument or right click a measure of the second instrument > staff properties > additional space above staff.
