Hi,
For Dutch users, using software in Dutch language, this is a normal dialog with the options Save, Discard, and Cancel:

Dutch dialog for Save, discard or Cancel.png

However, in MuseScore this is the dialog:
MuseScore dialog (Dutch) for Save, discard, cancel.png

i don't know, this is a translation 'thing', or 'by design', but it would be very great if the second option 'Verwerpen' can be translated to 'Niet opslaan'. We think the option 'Verwerpen' is the Belgian translation, but for Dutch people it's much easier to use 'Niet opslaan' (with a shortcut 'N' ;-) )

Thanks

Theo

That text is not in the MuseScore translations, it probably comes straight from Qt.

OK, found it in ...share/locale/qt_nl.ts

We could fix it there, but whether and how it'd be possible to get shortcuts to work is beyond me.
Edit: yes we can, just need to add an & right before the desired shortcut character. Whether we want to do that is another question, doing it for all qt*ts files would be quite a pain.

Also would it be needed to split the dutch translation into nl_NL and nl_BE for this? Does the Belgian version of that dialog in Word call it 'verwerpen`?

Hi,

Yes, i think it's a good idea to split the dutch translation into nl_NL and nl_BE, or the Belgian users of MuseScore have to agree with the change from 'Verwerpen' to 'Niet opslaan'...

The Belgian version of the dialog is 'verwerpen', the Dutch is 'Niet opslaan'.

Maybe i can help you to update the nl_NL-file with 'Dutch' words/phrases (please tell me how).

Title Nightly release 55092d7 - Dutch dialog with Save, Discard, Cancel Dutch dialog with Save, Discard, Cancel
Reported version 3.0 2.1

Are there more such differences?

(not an issue of the current nightly builds, 2.0.3 has the same issue, and both branches, master as and 2.0.4 branch would benefit from a fix)

As commented on the PR, but reposted here for Theo to follow along:

+0 from a Flemish voice; our languages share nearly all terms with regards to software linguistics.

Further looking into this specific one, it seems Dutch people mostly see 'Verwerpen' as a dated translation, although it is technically still the correct translation of "Discard" vs "Don't Save" (reference to a similar question (in Dutch) for the OpenOffice project: https://forum.openoffice.org/nl/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=399)
I personally don't find the minor differences between our languages big enough to warrant separate translations. I'm also not opposed to changing the translation to match the modern trend, but looking at that evolution it seems more programs are tending towards a simplified Yes/No/Cancel, rather than Save/Discard/Cancel

Hi JeeTee,

Without starting a big discussion between Flamish and Dutch, i think all Dutch people never use(d) the term 'Verwerpen'.

Maybe you're right; it's 'old', out-dated, but still typical Flamish.

Look to all popular software, with 'Dutch' GUI interface selected: it's all 'Niet Opslaan', and never 'Verwerpen'.

From your side, you're right with your opinion to change the dialog in Yes, No, Cancel: that's more simple, and not dependent to a specific language ;-)

Problem is that this one here is used somewhere under the cores via Qt, where we don't have much control what button set is getting used. If we had, those string were in mscore_*.ts, not qt_*.ts and could get translated on Transifex, so the Yes, No, Cancel is not an option

Status (old) patch (code needs review) fixed

Fixed in branch master, commit 7067c5a32c

fix #123531: separate Flemish from Dutch Qt translation

for the difference in translation of the "Discard" button, 'Verwerpen'
vs. 'Niet opslaan'. Also add shortcuts to the Discard and Save buttons.
Also make sure the qt_*.qm files get build by 'make lrelease'
