Musescore: Load error confusion

• Nov 10, 2015 - 21:56

I've been trying to open a file that I've been working on for months now. I'm not sure why it isn't opening but everytime I click to open it, I get

"Cannot read file C:\Users\Austin\Documents\MuseScore2\Scores\originalconcertband.mscz.mscz:"

I haven't done anything new to the file itself, I'm really frustrated and upset that Musescore Is doing this to me on something I've been working on since March. Any idea what to do?

Did you have a system crash or disk failure while trying to save it? Any message from MuseScore about closing abnormally? Any message next time you started it about not shutting down properly the previous time?

You could try to load the backup MuseScore created last time you opened the file - same filename but starting with a period and ending with a comma which you'll need to remove before opening the file. The file might be hidden so you might need to enable display of hidden files in your file browser to find it.

Which previous versions? Were using some sort of file system versioning software or cloud backup service? Or maybe just doing "Save As" periodically to save checkpoints along the way? Could you post one of those previous versions?

As for the hdiden files, I am not talking about the strangely named versions in MuseScore's private folders that are used for crash recovery. i am talking abiut hidden files in the same folder as the score itself. MuseScore always creates these, so unless you deleted it, it has to be there. Again, same folder as the score itself, but the name will start with a period and end with a comma.
