Title MuseScore 3 MuseScore 3 statup time too long
Status active needs info

Are you using MDL? If so, which only 3 minutes you're the lucky owner of a pretty speedy computer. Loading the soundfonts that come with MDL are known to take ages to load on MuseScore startup

Musesore Drum Line, an extension you can load and install. It comes, and they it the point here, with a prerty large soundfont, whoch takes ages to load

So what Soundfonts have you loaded?

SF2 type soundfonts should not cause delays as far as I'm aware, SF3 may create a delay for playback to start after the start of MuseScore, but not add to startup time, SFZ would cause a long startup time

I'm using a Dell Inspiron laptop that runs all other programs normally (MS Word, Excel, PPT), Visio CAD, WavePad Editor, etc. Whereas MuseScore 2.3 starts in 10 seconds, 3.0 take 3 or more minutes.

There are many things that slow down loading any version of MuseScore. Sound fonts (Especially if you have MDL added) and Multiple scores open. For me, version 3.1 opens far faster than 2.3.2 and I have basically the same things loading in both.

the version I'm using is 3.1.0.7078

and I can't find a android version except for listening. So by tablet I'm assuming ChromeBook or similar

@EdJako - I don't see if you answer the question about MDL. Again, it's known that those soundfonts take a long time to load. This was just as true in 2.3.2 as in 3.1. Even if you're not using MDL, it could be some other soundfont. Go to View / Synthesizer in both versions and compare what see on the Fluid and Zerberus tabs between 2.3.2 and 3.1 to be sure. Most liekly whatever difference you are seeing has nothing do with the version of MuseScore and everything to do with what soundfonts you have loaded.

Same "issue" here (using MuseScore 3.4.2.9788).
Uninstalling MuseScore Drumline from Help -> Resource Manager -> Extensions reduced the startup time from over 1.5 minutes to just a few seconds (I realize I lost the MDL functionality by doing that of course).

Workaround No Yes

Also just removing the SFZ soundfonts from the synthesizer would have the same effect, but would keep the MDL palette, so you could still enter this kind of music, just not listen to it

I have a similar problem, but only on my laptop, which is the most powerful PC in the house - ASUS win 10, i7 with SSD and 16Gb ram ,1050ti GPU

After clicking on the Musescore icon there is a mouse icon with a spinning load circle for a couple of seconds, but the loading circle soon disappears, followed by a very long mystery wait before before Musescore splash screen comes up and Musescore.exe appears in task manager.. During this long mystery wait it gives the impression that nothing is loading - and the confused operator ( me ) clicks again and again causing a crash.

No plug ins or MDL , only basic install with MuseScore_General.sf3

Reported version 3.5 3.1

So you do have MDL installed.
Now check in Synthesizer's Zerberus Tab whether you actually use it's Soundfont too. Just switching away from the MDL worksspace does not do that, and it is the soundfont loading that causes this huge startup delay

Hi,

The Fluid tab only has MuseScore_General.sf3 sound font.
Zerberus tab is empty.
MDL seems to be uninstalled as the "Uninstall" button is greyed out, and the install/update button is ready and active in Musescore resources window. ( see previous attachment)

I tried the following:

Reverted back to factory settings - no change.
Uninstalled Musescore and reinstalled latest version - no change. Still long delay to splash screen.

I noticed that during the long wait for the splash screen, Musescore.exe appears with zero CPU in background processes. It just hangs there doing nothing. When the splash screen appears, Muescore.exe moves to apps section of Task manager and CPU 25% while it is loading - loading process from this point is normal amount of time.

Are there some complete uninstall procedures for MDL to be sure? Is there maybe a hidden user directory of old MDL settings or load files that is not completely deleted by a reinstall?

Thank you

Same as Paul6. I use MuseScore frequently and it has suddenly gone from seconds to a minute+ to start. No extensions installed, no MDL (and have never used it). Have Reset it. Have uninstalled and reinstalled. Running the latest version ... which was working OK and now not. I do, however, have headphones and speakers and have toggled between the two (which is always a bit buggy and generally involves restarting MuseScore). It was after one of these restarts that the problem first appeared and I have not been able to resolve.

Hi Jojo,

There is something very peculiar about the latest Musescore installation on my laptop - one which I have tried fixing with many re installs and registry cleaning

Observations:

  1. The Windows 10 wait timer does not appear after clicking Musescore desktop icon
  2. Musescore.exe appears in "Background processes" Task manager almost immediately, but nothing happens
  3. Musescore splash window does not appear for a long time
  4. When Musescore splash screen eventually appears, it loads very fast, and Musescore.exe moves to "Apps" in Task Manager
  5. Soundfonts I have loaded in the laptop are the same as my old desktop computer which load quickly. No MDL. no huge sound fonts
  6. Previously, big sound fonts didn't stop the splash screen from appearing quickly, you just wait longer on the splash screen.
  7. The laptop is a new and very fast i7 16Gb ram with fast SSD, my old desktop is a 10 year old Core 2 on Win 10, so the laptop should load many times faster - but is not.
  8. Musescore on my desktop is using older 3.4.2.9788, and Qt is 5.9.8 but hesitant to update until laptop problem is fixed
  9. The laptop is using latest 3.5.2.311459983, 5.9.9

Is there some sort of debug trace that shows what Musescore is waiting for before loading the splash screen?
Is there some sort of deep clean uninstall?
I have tried factory settings reset - no luck. I might try updating the Nvidia graphics card driver next

Thank You
Paul

Hi Jo Jo,

I should have read your last suggestion. : (

I turned off Let Windows manage your printers, and then selected a non network printer as a default.

A network printer which was offline, and set as default by Windows 10 that caused the problem

SOLVED

In reply to by Jojo-Schmitz

Yes, thats it.

This sneaky Windows 10 setting was working against me in the background - resetting back to the network printer, even when it was offline later.

Uncheck the "Let Windows manage my default printer" and set default to something always online, eg directly connected to PC and on, or better internal like "Microsoft Print to PDF"

In reply to by Jojo-Schmitz

I hope that is something that will be fixed. A real pain to fire up the network printer every time I want to start MuseScore and I don't really want to be changing my printer back and forth so I can open a piece of software I may not wish to print from. I manage my default printer (not Windows) and this is a new problem.

Those advices didn't work for me. Even with the "Let Windows manage my default printer" off, still there is a long delay to splash screen. My Windows 10 was recently updated, if that helps.

Title Unreachable means that when the printer is off, Windows keeps looking for printers more than It should?? MuseScore 3 startup time too long

MuseScore on startup tries to connect to the default printer to determine the default paper format.
If that default printer it is a networks printer and current unreachable, this operation needs to time out, that takes... time...

I found a solution for my situation. Startup went down from 30 seconds to 1 second. Problem was as follows:
I have bought a new computer, and I had not installed the drivers for my printer. I could still print, but it always took quite a long time to get the preview and print. I suspected that it would be best to actually install the driver for the printer, but I had a lot to do so I skipped that. Now when I installed Musescore I got 30 second startup time, which was frustrating. Read somewhere that Musescore checks the printer at startup, so I thought, OK, now I really have to install the driver for the printer. I did. After that, the startup time for Musescore is totally normal, 1 second.
