My MuseScore Program Keeps Freezing/Crashing

• Feb 23, 2025 - 17:42

My MuseScore program has been crashing frequently upon startup recently. Even when it does respond, I can't perform any actions because it keeps freezing/crashing after each operation. As shown in the attached screenshots (Attachment 1 and Attachment 2), the program repeatedly switches between these two states. I have already consulted similar articles and tried all the solutions within my capabilities, but the problem persists.

It may be useful to sever links to external resources,
(1) Instead of a hardware printer, select 'print to PDF',
(2) Set audio device to 'default'
(3) Turn off 'Note Preview'
(4) 'Start Empty'

(1) Instead of a hardware printer, select 'print to PDF'
Open a file or create a new one
Menu: > File > Print > Scroll down the list to "Microsoft print to PDF"

(2) Set audio device to 'default'
Disconnect all external audio
Go to Windows Sound Setting, make sure neither output or input devices are external. eg, on my computer: output: "Speakers / Realtek" input: "Microphone Array"
Then, in Musescore: Menu: > Edit > Preferences > Audio & Midi >
'Audio Device', select "System default"
'Midi' "No device"

(3) Turn off 'Note Preview'
Menu: > Edit > Preferences > Note Input >
Un-check 'Play notes when editing'

(4) 'Start Empty'
Menu: > Edit > Preferences > General >
Select "Start Empty"

LMK if none of this helps.

Maybe you'll get lucky. But reinstall by itself never works. You would need to run a search of your drive for MuseScore4 and delete everything that the search finds. Then run a Registry cleaner. Something that might have worked initially might have been to go to Control Panel>Programs and features>Select MuseScore4>Repair.

I suggest 4 first if you prefer that version. If it is stable even for only an hour just so you can make the changes I mentioned above, and probably more important what Jojo advises. Full disclosure : I use v3.7 because I need plugins. But you said v3.6.2 was also giving trouble.

I've just removed every file associated with MuseScore and performed a fresh installation of MuseScore 4. Subsequently, I managed to execute the repair process. However, the issue remains unchanged post-repair; the application abruptly crashes and shuts down upon launch.

Lilypond will need far more patience and attention to detail than Musescore, which the OP seems to lack, based on the previous responses.
Also, once you put music into Lilypond, moving it to another app is not easy.
I think the OP will need Sibelius or Dorico, some platform with a full dedicated support team.

Maybe, I don't actually know, but would have thought that paid products provide customer support directly, and wouldn't rely on volunteers. As to supporting the OP - I actually took a lot of time reviewing my past experience with Musescore crashes and carefully writing out my responses, and asking for details. The OP couldn't be bothered to reply. So I think an app like Lilypond would require more patience and attention to detail than the OP displays.

Nope. Just a single help forum run users. Everything else is Knowledgebase articles.
The OP has been dealing with this for over two weeks. He has tried all suggestions without success. I suspect some kind of computer problem like file permissions or something.
Some people come to MuseScore from other software and can't make heads or tails of it.
We all find different software to be easy to use or not. Lilypond might be just the thing.
Plus, it looks like English is not their first language. So there's that.
