Have to reboot Musescore 2.2.1 to see added tempo text (sometimes)

• Apr 25, 2018 - 21:27

Hi, this is my first post, Musescore is awesome, thank you very much developers<3

Sometimes when I add a Tempo marker it doesn't show up on screen, even though it is in the score, it's changes the tempo. I can't see it to select it, 'show invisible' doesn't help. There is a work around; save the project, close and reopen Musescore. It's an intermittent problem, but once it starts happening it keeps happening until Musescore is rebooted.

I haven't had this issue since before the latest update 2.2.1, maybe a coincidence but I used 2.2.0 a lot and didn't run into the issue.

Anyone else have the same issue?

Also while I'm here, sometimes items end up being pushed on to the next page due to re formatting, clipping bars etc. When this happens the item becomes un-selectable until I manage to find and delete the bar it's connected to. It's hard to find the bar as normally you see what an item is connected to by selecting it :) Has anyone got an fix for this or is it a bug?

Cheers

I use with multiple score tabs open and relatively big scores 10+ pages, often with images in spacer boxes (for live film work) on 2017 MacBook Pro 13.

Hi Mike and thanks :)

Might this be a different issue? The link seems to be about tempo text not responding to changes.

My issue is that the tempo text isn't visible until MuseScore is rebooted. The tempo text is playing back at a correct bpm and I can change it no problems, once I can see it to select it.

....or am I missing something?

I've never heard of issues with text not appearing until a restart, but since you also mention items being moved to the next page, my guess is that this is related. In general, you should not be moving elements so far that they end up on another page - they should simply be attached to the proper measures in the first place. Feel free to attach a score you are having trouble with so we can help you how to do things more correctly to avoid these problems in the future.

Hi Mark thanks for the responce.

I should have created two seperate posts as they are unrelated issues (I'm 100% sure they are unrelated:)

So the issue of tempo text (or element) intermittently not appearing until restart could be a bug that hasn't been picked up yet, or could be an anomaly with my set up, maybe I should reinstall MuseScore?

Cheers

Okay, it just happened again.

I can't remember if I selected a whole bar or just a note, but something in bar 65 of this upload was selected. I double clicked a tempo item from the palette, and then it happend. I can add tempo makers to other bars (I did to bar 66 just to check) and they show up but not for bar 65.

I have uploaded the session, however it should just load up fine with the tempo marker in place, as rebooting MuseScore fixes it. I just uploaded it so as to show that nothing else strange is happening in the session.

This isn't a complaint, I just wanted to share this because I love MuseScore and thought it could be helpful if other people ran into the same issue. Hopefully it's just something with my rig or, although I can't imagine what it could be, something strange I'm doing to my scores.

ps the attachment is a page of ideas for another work, so no judging!

Cheers

@Joey_Dolezal... You wrote:

Try selecting the whole bar with the notes in it (not just a single note), then add the tempo mark.
What happens?
(See the images in my other post.)

I'm on Windows 10, you're on MacBook.
On Windows, I can't reproduce your need to reboot (and the tempo marker does show for me), but I get 11 marks - one for each note in the measure. This occurs only when I select a whole measure populated with notes, then apply the tempo.

Regards.

I would say the results of selecting a measure and double clicking a tempo mark will add a tempo mark to every note/rest selected. If you select several staves in a measure you will get a tempo mark everywhere there is a note. As a test try for example putting short notes on beats one and two of the treble and beats three and four of the bass with rests or half notes in the other beats. This feature is what allows the Tempo change plugin to work.

@joey_D Knowing this might help you to know if you had a single note or measure selected when you added the tempo. I suspect this has something to do with the invisible piano staff you have. Invisible staves cause all kinds of strange problems I won't enumerate right now. It might also help to track down the issue if you remember which instrument(s), note(s), measure etc. was selected when you entered the tempo. The more info you remember when you see the problem the easier it will be to reproduce.

@Joey_D...
Regarding your attachment 'mfk_ideas.mszc' you wrote:

then:
...it should just load up fine with the tempo marker in place, as rebooting MuseScore fixes it.

I, like Marc, did not see a 'fixed' bar 65 (i.e. with a tempo mark) when I opened 'mfk_ideas.mszc'.
(That's why I had to add them myself in the illustrated example above.)

Regards.

Thanks everyone

@jm6stringer, sorry to clarify "I can add tempo makers to other bars (I did to bar 66 just to check) and they show up but not for bar 65." I was trying to say that were visible for bar 66 but not for 65. "and they show up" Sorry for the confusion.

@Marc Sabatella Yes your right! ....Hhmm, then in this case it wasn't letting me add a tempo marker to the bar until I restarted MuseScore. Did you see anything in the score that might have caused this? I think it might be my system as no one else seems to have the issue. Although I think you guys think it's something strange that I'm doing. The thing is, I've used MuseScore for probably four or five years now, and heavily for the last two years, I hadn't had this issue before updating to 2.1.1. Not that I'm complaining, I have a work around, just a quick reset :) Just posting incase it happens to someone else also.

@mike320 I wished I remembered more before it happened but I'm in the middle of working, not thinking about the software, when it happens. re invisible staffs, I find being able to make things invisible makes MuseScore really flexible, I hope it's not creating other issues, I can't imagine how it could be related to this issue, but I don't know about coding.

@Joey_Dolezal... To condense...
It seems like you describe two different behaviors.

Behavior #1:
1. Closing and re-opening MuseScore alllows a 'phantom' tempo marker to show itself.
As per:
Sometimes when I add a Tempo marker it doesn't show up on screen, even though it is in the score, it's changes the tempo. I can't see it to select it, 'show invisible' doesn't help. There is a work around; save the project, close and reopen Musescore.

OK... So, in this case (#1) the phantom marker changes the playback tempo, and then only shows itself on re-start..

Behavior #2:
2. Closing and re-opening MuseScore allows a tempo marker to be added, where earlier it could not be added at all (not even as a 'phantom').
As per:
I can add tempo makers to other bars (I did to bar 66 just to check) and they show up but not for bar 65.
and::
@Marc Sabatella Yes your right! ....Hhmm, then in this case it wasn't letting me add a tempo marker to the bar until I restarted MuseScore.

OK... So, in this case (#2) the tempo marker could not be added to the problem bar 65; and the playback tempo was not changed (as in behavior #1). Re-start is the fix.

I believe this sums it up.
Regards.

@Jm6stringer Yes, perfectly succinct :) thank you!

Update, I have been using MuseScore extensively for the last two days (since my last post) without it happening until just then.

This time behaviour 1 happened, the tempo mark was added but couldn't see it until restart.

I selected a full bar rest (in bar 42), double clicked a tempo change but it didn't show up.

I then reloaded MuseScore and the tempo change was there in bar 42, where I wanted it.
