Latest update gone wrong

• Feb 26, 2019 - 21:25

Loading MuseScore 3 this evening, I was invited to update to version 3.0.3. Everything appeared to go well. However, when I came to play back the piece I have been working on by hand slowly for many months, I found that all the instruments are now playing back as pianos. The staves remain labelled as the correct instruments, and the mixer desk has all the correct labels. Everything looks correct, but the playback sound has been reduced to lots of pianos. Have I done something wrong? I shall feel extremely demoralised if I have have to write out the work again. Is there guidance to be found?

Well, including some test scores, and minor modified versions, I've got 39 scores created since Feb 01.

Let's say that at least 10 of those are (were) finished.

Most are orchestrations, with at least a dozen instruments. (Did I mention how much I love this software?)

If the work-around is "Go and redo your work...", that's not exactly a work-around, is it?

I've backed out to 3.0.2, and 'skipped' the 3.0.3 update.

No, it doesn't. I have a viola, a cello and a double bass line that each move between being bowed and pizzicato. Regardless of what I do, the pizzicato sections play as a piano unless I change the line to "pizzicato strings" which then changes the entirety of each line to pizzicato.

Thank you for this. It was beyond my knowledge.

However, whilst I was able to play the piece once I had reassigned each of the instruments, saved the file, exited the file, reloaded the file, and checked that the changes remained intact. I then exited MuseScore 3, re-launched the program, and discovered that none of the changes that I believed that I had saved had in fact been saved to file.

I do not know how to revert to MuseScore 3.0.2. There is no installer for it. When I rechecked the download directory on my computer I have installation databases for MuseScores 2.1, 2.1.1, 2.3.2, 2.3.2 and 3.0.1. (I mis-reported that I had clicked on the installation database for MuseScores 3.0.2 - it was 3.0.1). When I tried to install MuseScore 3.0.1, I received the following message: "A later version of MuseScore 3 is already installed. Setup will now exit." I do not appear to have a way of reverting either to MuseScore 3.0.1 or to MuseScore 3.0.2.

That is good to know now, yet how can I have known that, and also be sure of it? In the context of a significant failure of the MuseScore 3.0.3 update to instruct correctly the integrated instrument sound library, things that had been certain suddenly became less certain.

Please do not mistake my current unease for unhappiness with MuseScore. MuseScore is what has enabled me to compose music for the first time in my life (to all intents and purposes) because I am able to hear only what has been composed and rendered into sound - unlike many people, I am able to 'hear' neither a written score nor imagined music. As I have neither money nor income, buying the likes of Sibelius, Finale or even Encore, are far beyond my resources. MuseScore has given me the opportunity significantly to re-evaluate my priorities.

I am also grateful for the existence of this online forum, and people, such as yourself, who are willing to advise MuseScore users. Thank you for your support.

If you didn't install version 3.0.4 yet or if you did but the problem persists, here's what you can do (it worked for me): Open the score, then open the mixer and manually reassign all the instruments, one by one. This seems like a silly procedure, but it worked for me. By the way, I installed the new version that just came out (3.0.4) and the problem was solved.
