Transfer between versions
I've just got Musescore after many years with Braeburn MusicPublisher (4, 5, and 6), mainly because a friend who was also using MP6 has gone onto a Mac and can't get MP6 for it. She's now using the latest Mac version, but I'm restricted to 2.0.2 here because I'm on Windows XP on my tower. (I do have Windows 7 on a laptop with a screen designed for watching wide screen films, but totally useless for DTP or music setting.) This is partly because I prefer XP, and partly because I have some software that will not run beyond XP and many files in it (including a book). When my friend sent me a piece set in MS to check, my version won't open her mcxz file. Having found "Import PDF" in my menus, she sent me a PDF. When I used the import thing, I was taken to musescore.com where I had to sign up. Signed up, I could find nothing about a PDF Converter mentioned in other threads here. Only sheet music. Is there some way round this problem? I am able to scan printed music (and good handwritten too) into MP6, where I can edit it - but my friend won't be able to do anything with it. Is there any way round this problem? (PS we settled on Musescore after evaluating it against Sibelius free on her Mac and Crescendo on my XP.) Please don't suggest that I get a Mac - I worked with them up to OS 8.6, but don't like the OS X setup (and the mouse does my head in - I use 5-button mice) - and I don't intend downgrading to a later version of Windows until my last hard drive with XP on it dies.

Try to export as Musicxml. It should then be possible to open that file with previous versions.
The attachment is made with 3.0.4, right click and rename (delete Music from the extension) from *.musicxml to *.xml

Thanks for that. Sorry for the delay in replying. I got into that file with ease. Not had a chance to test it with a reply to her Mac yet. One query, though. Do I send her the .xml file I export, or do I need to add the 'music' to the xml?

either works. .musicxml is the newer extension for MusicXML, .xml the older

Thanks. I sometimes wonder how we managed in the days of eight character name dot three character extension...
PDF is not going to be a viable way of sharing music between versions. Instead, have your friend export MusicXML, that will always import far better.
FWIW, if you are that dead set against more modern version of Windows, there is also Linux, you can even dual boot that with Windows. Or use a Chromebook and run Linux apps that way.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think my software would run on Linux, and I've not yet found a way of finding out simply what Linux is about anyway. As to Chromebooks, they appear to have the wide screen of the modern laptop, rather like my Windows 7 one. For what I do with it when camping or at meetings (mainly emails, searching for things, or spreadsheets), it's OK. But not for my DTP work or music (for which I use a nearly square screen). When I get time, I may look into Linux more - but so far what I've found is rather technical. Back in the days of programming for MS DOS 3.3 I was quite into technical. Nowadays, I'm more into using.
You don't need to "export" to xml to go from old version to new one, the normal MuseScore file will do.
So only when your friend sends you a score she needs to export to musicxml instead of a normal save. To send the score back, a normal save is enough.

Thanks again to all. We're connecting now, but using 'mxl' format from her to me, and mscz from me to her. Just looked mxl up, and got told that it contains a compressed MusicXML file. Couldn't find an Export to MusicXML on her Mac, but tried mxl and it worked straight off. Now all I need is to find a way of transferring MusicPublisher files to MuseScore... Probably isn't one. I've not got anything longer than a page in those, so I can just retype. I wish more forums were as quick and friendly to awkward questioners as this seems to be.
