This bug is fixed in current versions. Workaround is to first select a rest and then enter note entry mode.
Great, thank you. The version I'm using I downloaded just two days ago, and the issue doesn't appear on the bug list as far as I can see - hence my report.

David this bug the third item listed on the known regressions for 0.9.4. It is not listed in the bug tracker because it was fixed (in the prereleases) before we had this bug tracker.
