One line stave - want to enter rhythm only

Hello, I can choose a one line stave, but can't create anything once it is opened. I am trying to create simple rhythm composition for my class. I am wanting to use a one line stave. Any suggestions. The page will set up, note input is selected, rest box is not clicked. When I try to insert a "quarter note" I get nothing but a white arrow. Thank you!
