Open the attached score. Notice the extra space above the first hairpin, and below the second hairpin, compared to the same view in MS 2.

Is it possible to reduce these spaces without turning off autoplacement?

My PR https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/4730 contains a new autoplace min distance setting for hairpins (as well as other elements that currently lack it). So this should be covered if/when that is ever merged.

No idea, I don't make the decisions. Seems from the comments that Anatoly has had other ideas of how things should work. I will discuss it with him further.
