transfer musescore 2 on old computer to musescore 3 on new computer

• May 9, 2019 - 01:52

I have scores on an older computer (Windows 7) which were created on musescore 2. My new computer (Windows 10) has musescore 3.

How can I transfer the scores from the old desktop to the new.

There are many ways to transfer files between computers, so I assume you are asking about the actual importing of the MS2 files to MS3. If you are SURE you want to update the files to MS3, (there are reasons that you might not, but those reasons are becoming less as MS3 is being improved) simply load them into MS3 and follow the prompt whether you wish to have the positions of elements re-set as MS3 uses different mechanisms to achieve results similar to what you may have used in MS2.

Regardless of whether you reset positions or not, I would recommend saving the files to a different directory, or with distinct file names, as you may find you wish to re-visit some work in MS2, and that is not possible with MS3 files. I would also recommend installing MS2 on your new computer as well. It is a fine score editor, and does what it does very well.

(If you ARE asking how to transfer files from one computer to the next, I would suggest putting all the files on a USB memory stick and transferring them that way.)

Thank you for your unput. I'm somewhat new to Musescore so I'm trying to figure out how to make the transfer. I first moved what looked like the MS2 to a USB stick but it would not open on my new computer. I downloaded MS2 onto the new computer.
Can you tell me what I should be doing to move the files to the memory stick?
Would I open the score and then click on "file" and "save as" or "export?"
Would I save it as an "uncompressed musescore file?" Can that then be moved to a USB stick?

many thanks for any help you can offer.

To transfer the files from the USB to version 3 on your new computer, you should be able to open the file on the USB, then save as and make sure you are in the MuseScore 3 scores folder so you will be saving then scores in a new location. You can keep the names of the files in the new location.
