Backup and restore settings

• Oct 7, 2019 - 01:06

I use portable applications where possible including the portable version of Musescore available through PortableApps.com. My main reason for doing this is so that I can easily backup and restore a program to its previous configuration should a clean install of Windows and/or the program itself be necessary.

The good folk at PortableApps.com have not yet made a portable version of Musesore 3.x available and it may be some time before this happens. However, I'd very much like to upgrade to version 3.

If I forego using the portable version and just use the standard non-portable installation, is there a way I can back up all my settings (all the tweaks and adjustments I've made to get the program working just the way I like it) so that I can later import/restore these settings should a clean install be necessary?

The adjustable settings are all stored externally. Things I know you will want to save if you have adjusted them are Shortcuts, workspaces, and the advanced settings. If you have custom styles set, you can easily save and load these using the format menu. The only other thing you might need is the plugins list, but the plugins themselves are each stored individually and can easily be downloaded using the menu on this page. If you have a custom instruments.xml, that is on your computer somewhere and can be linked to by every instance of MuseScore you use. I can't think of anything else you might need to restore you preferences.

I do recommend that you upgrade to version 3, you might want to wait a couple of days until the official 3.3 is released so you don't need to upgrade twice in a short time.

Thanks Mike320 and Jojo for your replies. Looks like a portable version of 3.x may not be too far away.

So if I have a style defined (which I do) and I base a new score on this style, it will include any keyboard shortcuts and workspaces I've defined? What about things like the paths for various folders (scores, styles templates etc) and canvas paper colour?

Come to think of it, I could probably just try this myself and see...

Thanks again.

From the handbook:

The other preferences (palettes, session, shortcuts, workspaces...) are in:

C:\Users[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore3\ (actually %LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore3)

You can save your scores wherever you want and you will need to find a backup plan. Primary storage can even be on a thumb drive if you want. User templates are only scores you have saved in the user's template folder and can be saved like any other score.

Styles are the items set in the Format->Style dialog or set by pressing the S button next to an option in the inspector.
