Musescore crashing again
Having downloaded the latest version of MS and worked with it for a few days it now crashes on entry (every time). I have sent the user reports. Will these help? I reverted to factory settings.

Do you mean note entry into a score?
If so, please attach a MuseScore file exhibiting such behavior.
In reply to You wrote: ...it now crashes… by Jm6stringer
no, on start up. But not always.
Oh I'm exasperated with this! Musescore has started crashing again on start up.
I have repeatedly asked for the crash report to be sent up.
I take the option to restart but it does not.
Occasionally the start up is successful. Once I get in, the editing works fine. Wood -What Good There Is To Say 9.mscz
I attach the score that is crashing.
In reply to Oh I'm exasperated with this… by Ali Wood
Try double-clicking a *.mscz file. If the program opens, from Preference disable Start Center.
In reply to Try double-clicking a *.mscz… by Shoichi
I did eventually find an old file that did open, and changed preference to uncheck Start Centre.
Then on going into current file it failed again.

That score doesn't crash for me
I take the option to restart but it does not. That option indeed doesn't work and has been removed for the next version
In reply to That score doesn't crash for… by Jojo-Schmitz
Well, there we are, I'm afraid can't really add any more useful information. My only option now is to open MS by clicking directly on a particular file and to go straight into it.
So when you said "it doesn't crash for me", if you went in directly it maybe doesn't illustrate the problem.
Are the crash reports examined? Quite understand if you don't have the time to look.
Thanks
In reply to Well, there we are, I'm… by Ali Wood
Try disabling Start Center in Preferences then. Maybe do a revert to factory settings first
In reply to Try disabling Start Center… by Jojo-Schmitz
The exasperation continues.
I tried everything - revert to factory settings - start without start centre, start with start centre, start by double clicking on score, start with numerous other scores, and the result is the same (I don't detect a pattern of behaviour) - it usually takes between 2-5 goes to load a score successfully.
If you were able to see this for yourself (taking control of my screen) it would perhaps convince you that I'm not exaggerating! I sometimes "send a report" but I believe we are not reading those.
I attach 3 files that regularly exhibit this load behaviour.
Thanks
In reply to The exasperation continues… by Ali Wood
I loaded all three of these into a current build of MuseScore 3.5, no problems at all. is there something I should have to do other than load them to see a problem?
In reply to I loaded all three of these… by Marc Sabatella
No. I suspect it is nothing to do with the actual file.
I can say with certainty that IF I reach the start centre then I'm able to continue.
If the Start Centre is unchecked then the problem often occurs.
In reply to I loaded all three of these… by Marc Sabatella
When a failure has occurred, I try going in again and try both Restore Session Yes and No alternately and after 2 or 3 goes I am able to get in. If you were to go into one of these scores, come out and then go in again perhaps you might experience the problem? (that's assuming the problem is to do with having been in one of these particular scores)
In reply to I loaded all three of these… by Marc Sabatella
... I mean going in the last time to a blank Musescore application, not a particular score. Sorry.
In reply to I loaded all three of these… by Marc Sabatella
OK, I've checked and see that I need to upgrade from 3.4.2.9788 to 3.5. I'll do that and report back. Don't want to waste your time if its a version issue.
In reply to I loaded all three of these… by Marc Sabatella
So, still problems, first with 3.5 release candidate and now with the latest release of 3.5.
Here's a transcript of what happened this morning:-
I have a MS icon on my desktop.
1) click on icon, selection opens, select file A, opens, fine, close file
2) click on icon, CRASH, cancel
4) click on icon, restore session = Yes, CRASH, cancel
5) click on icon, restore session = Yes, CRASH, cancel
6) click on icon, restore session = No, CRASH, cancel
7) click on icon, restore session = No, CRASH, cancel
8) click on icon, restore session = Yes, CRASH, cancel
9) click on icon, restore session = Yes, selection opens, select A, opens, fine, close
10) click on icon, restore session = Yes, selection opens, select a different file B, opens, fine, close
11) click on icon, CRASH, cancel
12) click on icon, restore session = YEs, selection opens, select original file A, opens, fine , close
13) click on icon, CRASH, cancel
14) right click on icon, select file A, CRASH, cancel
15) Go to folder with my file A in and double-click my file A, restore session = No, CRASH
16) Double-click file A, restore session Yes, opens, fine.
It is frustrating that you don't apparently appear to be able to process any audit file that I could send.
Example file A attached
Please advise.

That score doesn't crash for me, MuseScore 3.5.0, Windows 7
But if starting MuseScore via double -click on score works for you, disable Startcenter in Prefences

In reply to I did give a detailed… by Ali Wood
We don't have a way of doing that, no, nor would it be helpful to us to watch it crash on your system if we can't reproduce the crash on our own. That's why it is crucial to have one specific file and one precise step of instructions that we can use to reliably reproduce the crash on our systems. You have examples, sure, but from your description, a different problem - one you said went away when you turned off the start center. Then you said some (different, apparently) problem came back, but randomly. That's the new problem we need a single score and a single set of precise instructions to reproduce.
In reply to We don't have a way of doing… by Marc Sabatella
This is my "reproduceable" crash:
Having set the start screen OFF in preferences.
For the First Crash:::::::
1. Click MS button
2. If no crash: choose File - Open Recent - select the file I sent
3. If no crash: just come out of it without updating.
Repeat 1 - 2 - 3 and sooner or later it crashes for me, sometimes on the 1st cycle, sometimes not until the 3rd or 4th cycle.
That is the random nature of it.
If you try this a few times and you get no crash, then there must be something wrong with my system, not MS.
So I hope it goes wrong for you!!! ;-)
For Subsequent Crashes in the same session::::::::
After any crash I get the option to Restore session but again then there is no common pattern, except that if I say "Yes" it always crashes, if I say "No" it is a random result
Hope this makes sense. You are smart guys, that's for sure.
In reply to This is my "reproduceable"… by Ali Wood
Unfortunately no crash in a dozen or more tries. So I suspect something else going on with your system. Have you tried doing a clear of your recent files list (from File menu)? How about placing the score in a folder all by itself and opening from there? The idea is to make sure there is no other file that MuseScore is looking at while opening this one.
I've done what you describe and don't get crashes from either version of Wood-What good there is to say. The other 3 scores you added Aug. 5 seem to have been eaten by the website. I think on the day you posted these, there was a problem with that but it probably wont make a difference.
Have you upgraded to 3.5.2? Are you still having crash problems? Do you have the start center unchecked in Edit->Preferences->General? I realize I'm rehashing the same steps as above but you seemed rather frustrated and want to make sure you are systematically following steps.
In reply to I've done what you describe… by mike320
Yes, I upgraded to 3.5.2
Yes I am still having crash problems
Yes I have the start centre unchecked.
Recent steps:
Started MS 3.5.2
No problem.
File - Open - (file other than Wood-What Good) - no problem - close
File - Open Recent - Wood - What Good - no problem - close
File - Open Recent - Wood - What Good - problem - (crash)
File - Open Recent - Wood - What Good - problem - Restore session (crash cancel)
File - Open Recent - Wood - What Good - problem - Restore session Yes (crash)
File - Open Recent - Wood - What Good - problem - Restore session No - opens - no problem - close
File - Open Recent - Wood - What Good - problem - Restore session No - opens - no problem - close
File - Open Recent - (file A other than Wood-What Good) - no problem - close
File - Open Recent - (file B other than Wood-What Good) - no problem - close
File - Open Recent - (file A other than Wood-What Good) - problem - (crash)
I am really sorry but it does not seem to follow a pattern. I used to be a computer analyst and so I know how frustrating this is for all concerned.
IMHO this is not related to a particular file, and must be related to either MS, or, my operating system which is Windows 10 / my configuration.
If you wish, I will try to draw up a repeated methodical test scenario, but I don't have time just at this moment.
I had just hoped that others were having similar problems, hence I jumped on the other thread when I spotted it today. Is it the case that others are having similar problems?

Look guys, you seem to be getting several crashes from people, not just me. As far as I can see, it would be tremendous if you could perhaps remotely log on to one of our sessions, see the problem at first hand, and be able to look at our system files / logs whatever. We've tried supplying the files but you can't reproduce the error and you've righty said so. I don't know how you can possibly work on correcting the problem unless you have some 'culprit' data or environment at first hand. There are some really sound remote support options and I for one would be happy to host such a session.

The crashes that a small percentage of people see specifically updates to 3.5 are now fairly well understood - a particular file being used by another process cannot be updated and somehow the usual Windows safeguards against that are failing. So even if we don't fully understand the solution, we do understand the prlbl,em, and the workaround is simple enough - use the Windows "repair" option, or uninstall/reinstall.
For any other crashes, we simply need sample scores and precise steps to reproduce so we can run under the debugger. Remote login would not help - we would need to run under the debugger on our own machines.

Unfortunately I can't get them to crash and the crash reporting system is currently broken. I'm not sure what's going on with it so you can't currently report a crash. If ever you do experience a crash and can send a report, post that you were successful here and I'll talk to some programmers to have them look at the report. Unfortunately until someone can see the crash report or duplicate the crash it's nearly impossible to fix.
In reply to I did the sample scores some… by Ali Wood
Yes, I remember there was a crash we couldn't reproduce in the past, but your post seemed to indicate you were seeing a new problem that was more similar to the one that some others are reporting. That crash is known and completely unrelated to your problem. If you aren't seeing a crash on each and every startup from program icon but working fine when started by double-clicking a file, your problem has nothing to do with the other problem being discussed, and unfortunately yours thus remains unique. If you are seeing the crash on every startup from icon, then the solution give here solves it completely and permanently, but unfortunately won't have any bearing on the moire sporadic unreproducible problem you were experiencing in the past.

I can confirm that I am sometimes (not every time) crashing before reaching any window. So with Start Centre switched off, I hit the icon, expecting to get an empty MS screen (ready to hit Open Recent or Open), and the screen shows, closely followed by the crash screen.
So in this scenario it cannot be related to opening a particular score. Perhaps it relates to something hanging on in the system from the last that I had been working on, almost as if the program was leaving its files with an incorrect address on exit?!
Hope this helps - forgive me if it just a reiteration of other people's problems.
Needless to say I am still getting crashes (often) going in by double-clicking a file without using the icon.

I've had some time to spend on this subject, and have played around with various scores again.
I reverted to factory settings and I have Musescore 3.5.
Being from an IT background I know the challenges that are presented by a user reporting system errors, so I do sympathise.
I have tried with and without start centre, with and without splash screen, clicking on icon or not, double clicking on files directly or not, Restore Session Yes or No, continue last session or not etc. etc.
I have tried with different scores, some large, some small. I realise that you have tried some of my scores and not reproduced an error.
I have tried closing the previous session with or without updating.
The results are never predictable - the error window appears on average about half the time.
All I do is attempt a few times to get i and invariably it lets me in after 2, or 3, or 4 goes. So I can function. It is just a piggin' nuisance (GB English), shall we say.
I can only reiterate the necessity for one of you brilliant guys to log into my computer real-time. Other organisations do this without too much fuss. I am fully paid up to Musescore and will help all I can.

As far as I know it is used under the hood by QtCreator which is what most people on Windows developer with, or did anyhow until relatively recently when MSVC started to be supported and most newer developers probably use that.
