Some questions about the new Musescore 3.6 / Engraving

• Jan 17, 2021 - 16:02

Question 1:
Yesterday I installed the new engraving update for musescore, and I must say I am a huge fan of it; But when I applied it to my jazz pieces, I was not a fan of the look. Is there a way to revert back to, at least certain scores, to a previous style and font rather than individually doing so? (I did select the marked box to automatically use the revamped engraving on all my scores before I realized I wasn't a fan of the look on my jazz pieces.)

Question 2:
This question may not directly apply to 3.6, but when exporting score and parts, is there a way to where I can have the parts display text, tempo and time signature markings, rehearsal marks, etc. at normal staff size but still have the master score display all these features at their larger sizes as I intended, or would I have to do all this manually? (Below I've attached an excerpt of a piece I'm currently revising in 3.6, but as well as working to clean up parts to distribute)

Do you mean you accidentally applied Leland & Edwin to a font that was previously using MuseJazz? If so, I recommend opening a score that still has MuseJazz still (or creating a new one) and using Format / Save Style to create an MSS you can then load into other scores.

If you mean other settings that you applied via "Reset All Styles to Default", I'd be curious to known which you think aren't working for jazz, and to see a sample score. I've tried with a number of lead sheets.combo, and big band charts, and so far haven't run into problems, but there is always room to tweak things further.

I'm not totally understanding the second question, what exactly do you want to see different? You mean, after generating parts, you want them to have different relative sizes for things? Parts can indeed have different style settings than the score. Just make the change you want in one part then hit the "Apply to All Parts" button.

I was able to resolve my issue in the first question, thank you, because honestly, my understanding of some of the engraving features such as style and how they work in musescore is very limited.

However, to my second question, I perhaps worded it poorly but let me give an example. In a piece on the master score, I set a tempo marking to 30pt to fit the larger score. But when I generate the parts, each part has these comically large tempo markings, and other features (time signatures, text, rehearsal marks, etc.). My question is if there is a way to either avoid or to quickly change these features when generating parts after applying those features to the master score? The only way I considered resolving this issue was by just doing it manually for each part, but I know that would take countless hours.

I have tried in the style settings to apply to all parts "follow staff size" as well, yet all these features are far too big, perhaps I am missing something with my aforementioned lack of an understanding of various engraving options and techniques, how they work and how to use them.

Yes, as I said, in one of the parts, change the styles to be as you like, then in Format / Style, click the "Apply to all Parts" button.

In the future, if you have a part set the way you like, use Format / Save Srtyle to create an "MSS" file with those style settings, then you can specify it as the default for parts in Edit / Preferences / Score.
