Error=XML_ERROR_EMPTY_DOCUMENT ErrorID=13 (0xd) Line number=0

• Mar 27, 2023 - 17:52

It is showing me this error message and I'm not sure what to do about it. When I press "open anyway" it doesn't really do anything and just shows me the score page but without the music. Has anyone gotten this before?

First, look for a backup:
For MuseScore 3:

For MuseScore 4:

The (MS4 handbook page is not available yet)

The only thing of value in your attachment is your score's thumbnail image:
thumbnail.png
You may be able to enlarge it in a photo viewer and perhaps see enough detail to copy the notation into a new score. The thumbnail displays an end barline, so maybe your score is only a single page. So, download the attachment and magnify the thumbnail.

Try to reset your Musescore program to factory settings.
This file can also be opened with a zip tool and the contained mscx file can be extracted and runs with MuS 3.6.2 (I cannot use MuS 4.x). That is what I did last time.
Since the behavior is the same as above, the error seems to be caused by an unexpected setting in MuS 4.

Unfortunately, not in all cases. One of the problems is, for example, if a measure repeat sign was used in MuS 4. Then in MuS 3 completely empty measures remain at the places, which can not be edited.

And if the 4.0 score was corrupt, there is quite a chance to be able to open it in MuS 3 anyway.

Hello! I've saved and closed the program, but the document won't open. What can I do? This isn't the first time this has happened; I've already lost some projects. Is there any way I can repair the documents? Using Musescore 3 doesn't work, and it's not possible to see the content in the documents. Thank you.

You can open a score in MuS 3.x if you extract the mscx file from the mscz file with a zip tool and open this mscx file. However, the text formatting of the title block is usually lost in the process.
If this does not work, which happens sometimes, there is a major bug in the file (only zeros; corruption during the zipping process etc.).
.If you have scores written in MuS 3.x, it makes sense to copy scores into the MuS 4 score folder and not to overwrite the 3.x originals with version 4.

Otherwise: also here the suggestion to reset MuS 4 first to factory settings. Maybe that is enough to be able to open the file again.

Attached is the file saved with MuS 3.6.2. You should also be able to open it with MuS 4.

As far as I can see this file is damaged beyond repair.
mscz files can be opened by a zip tool to find the mscx score inside. But here this mscx is totally empty due to an header error.
Try to find a backup version on your computer, e.g. in the hidden folder .mscbackup. Depending on your operating system and its settings, you may need to change some settings so that you can see the hidden folders and files.

> Could someone give instructions on how to fix the problem in the future?

This error message comes for a number of different problems, so there is no standard answer for it. However, it is very often related to the zip process when saving.

If you've looked at the other posts here, you know that you can open the mscz file with a zip tool. Often you can extract the included mscx file with the full score and continue working with that. Unfortunately not here, it's corrupted and can't be extracted. First try to find an older version in the hidden folder .mscbackup. If that doesn't work, I still see the possibility to recreate the score from the fortunately existing excerpts:

  • Open the file with a zip tool (7-zip, Winzip, etc).
  • save the folder 'Excerpts' on your PC
  • create a new, empty score with all instruments
  • open the mscx files of the excerpts one after the other and copy the notes into the new score.

This is not little work, but much less than rewriting everything.

I also recommend that when you write a score, you regularly make a copy under a new name so that if something goes wrong, you don't lose everything.

Hi! Would anyone be able to help me get this file back? I've been working pretty hard on it and it's given me this: Error=XML_ERROR_EMPTY_DOCUMENT ErrorID=13 (0xd) Line number=0 when I try to open it. Anyone know what can be done? Thanks!

I hate this so much i made a whole band piece but it now doesn't open because of this Error=XML_ERROR_EMPTY_DOCUMENT ErrorID=13 (0xd) Line number=0 thing.

Hi! I'm new-ish to writing and I just spent the past month on this wind band piece. I have a file that says it's empty, version 4.10 I think, and I am quite sad because it was my first big passion project. Can anyone help, I've been scouring the forums but don't super understand the jargon. I know it doesn't have a name, sorry, it's meant to be called The Dinosaur Waltz but I kept forgetting to name it. I'd appreciate some help unzipping/extracting it. Thank you so much!

Unfortunately, this file has 0 byte file length, i.e. absolutely no content. I am sorry, it cannot be repaired.

There is a hidden folder in your score folder called ".mscbackup". You may find a backup copy there.
Ask on the Internet how to make hidden files and folders visible in your operating system (which I do not know).

In my case I had the same error message. I noticed that in the root folder of my scz file, a file was created with a name similar to the following: fileName.scz.autosave. I deleted the file with autosave extension and was able to recover fileName.scz to its latest saved version. If it worked for me on Linux Ubuntu, 22 and MuseScore 4.0.

Tried unzipping and it just says "Can not open file 'C:\Users\robyn\Documents\MuseScore4\Scores\Rockaria!.mscz' as archive.". Has a backup file but same problem. Can anyone even tell me if it looks salvageable?

Folders where you can search for musescore files (Windows) if you did not save one:

  • C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore4
  • C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore4\cloud_scores
  • C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore4\cloud_scores\.mscbackup
  • C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\Documents\MuseScore4\Scores
  • C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\Documents\MuseScore4\Scores\.mscbackup
  • C:\Users\{YourUserAccount}\Documents\MuseScore4\Cloud Scores

This list may be incomplete or incorrect though
If you find something interesting, copy that file to another location and open from that new location

Also Musescore saves backup files in a hidden .mscbackup folder, which is located in the same place as your project file

I wonder if any of those past attachments posted above (which we discarded) could also be opened with Chromebook's zip tool.
Normally, any file showing this message:
Error=XML_ERROR_EMPTY_DOCUMENT ErrorID=13 (0xd) Line number=0
has been mostly unrecoverable for those of us using 7-Zip.

In reply to by majogarciaros

OK, unfortunately you're right - my attempt to extract the MSCX failed and I didn't notice because my editor opened and showed my the last-opened file and I didn't realize it wasn't correct.

So instead, best to search your version history to find a recently saved version. If you're on Windows, check OneDrive; on macOS, check Time Machine.

In reply to by christiannath2

Try opening it in the latest version of MuseScore -> no joy.
Try opening it using a ZIP file manager - if you see an .MSCX file, then extract that - > no joy.
If you still can't access it, use a hex editor/advanced text editor to open the file -> if you see a file beginning with PK..... then try a ZIP repair utility. Unfortunately, for your file, you see that the file is full of zeros.

So, you need to look for the last backup of the file that you saved and re-do the work from the point of that save onward.

Hello,
I can not open this attached mscz file. Same error:

Error=XML_ERROR_EMPTY_DOCUMENT ErrorID=13 (0xd) Line number=0.

I have tried the Zip thing and it has not worked for me. Could anyone give me advice or convert the file? Thank you very much beforehand.

I am glad it worked but this is not a clean fix. An .mscz file is a zip file and inside it is the score file (the .mscx) plus other info like the style file, thumbnail and other info. So now you have the raw score file and nothing else. Here's my advice:

  1. If you have the original .mscz file, before the save to .pdf.mscz, open it in MuseScore, forget about everything you did and go to step 4 below.

  2. I assume you've lost the original .mscz file otherwise you wouldn't be here asking for help. If this is the case, go to the folder you mentioned - there should be files like Psychic Island.mscx, score_style.mss, probably a "Thumbnails" and "META-INF" folders too and maybe other stuff. ZIP all these files and folders together to a file named Psychic Island.mscz and open it in MuseScore. Then go to step 4 below.

  3. If all you are left with is the file you attached and renamed per my earlier comment - the raw score file - Psychic Island.mscx - then open it in MuseScore, go to menu File -> Save as and save it as Psychic Island.mscz. Use this file Psychic Island.mscz going forward.

  4. With the score open in MuseScore, go to menu File -> Export -> choose Format "PDF file" if not already selected, then choose what to export to the PDF (the checkboxes on the left hand side of the dialog) and click the Export button. This is how a PDF is created in MuseScore.

Hello,
I've been working for weeks on this, and now suddely I get the error message above and I can't open the score anymore.
I've been trying the advices above, but it didn't work.

Can anybody help me make my score work again, please ???

Thanks for your quick answer, although it's difficult to accept after weeks of work :-(
I have an earlier version of it (attached below), that gives me the same error message since yesterday. Could you please have a look at it ?
Many people seem to have encountered the same problem. Do you know where it comes from? What can I do in order to avoid this catastrophe in the future?

Have you read any of the advice, above, about trying to open it in another program to see if it just contains zeros or about trying to fix it if it is a corrupted ZIP-type file? If you have, then please detail each step you took to try to recover your file and the results of your efforts.
