That indicates you have settings left over from an older incompatible build still on your system. You can either go to Edit / Preferences and change what MuseScore does on startup (the new version of this file ends mscz instead of mscx), or run MuseScore with the "-F" option to reset to factory settings - probably not a bad idea, as you likely will have other conflicts with those older settings as well (eg, wrong version of templates and soundfonts being used).
I've tried to revert to factory settings as suggested, but the command that opened the application was:
/Applications/MuseScore\ 2.app/Contents/MacOS/mscore -F
After the Terminal process was completed MuseScore still presented the same error "Cannot read file :/data/My_First_Score.mscx:" when I opened it normally. I tried deleting all files linked with MuseScore in the Documents, Library and support files.
I solved the problem in the Preferences, changing the Star with score to :/data/My_First_Score.mscz (changing the extension name to mscz instead of mscx)
Even after restoring to the factory setting the path to the start up files retained the old file name. So changing the ending of the file name manually in Preferences did the trick.
Thanks for the heads up. The problem has been resolved now.

Did you read the correct handbook. http://musescore.org/en/node/35956
Hi Jojo-Schmitz,
No I realise now that I had read the wrong handbook.
