Text placement in screen vs printed

• Jun 15, 2021 - 20:03

I have placed "rit" and "a tempo" markings on both staves of a two piano score which looks ok on the screen. When printed, the text is way off. What am I doing wrong?

Your png image looks the same as the print example pdf -- not "way off".
The spacing needs to be adjusted regardless.
Please attach the score (or that page).

To move text from above to below a staff, simply press "X", no need to drag. Above the staff is the standard liocattion for tempo and most other text, that's why it is the default. But it's true that sometimes piano music specific places some of these markings between the staves instead, so "X" is the answer.

Dragging kind of works but it does different things with respect to automatic placement, which could partially explain why you see differences when the layout changes, which it necessarily does between the special "single page" view you are using versus ordinary page view, which is how your score is actually printed. Single space view is not going to give you a true representatiion of hwo your score looks when printed - the spacing of the staves in the real score will depend on the page size and number of systems per page, and this is not meaningful in the special "single page" view.

The X only works on Piano 1. If I try to drag a new "RIt" to the second piano part, the space between the staves dramatically increases. If I use the "X" function on the new "Rit" it overlays the one in Piano !. I tried clicking on a note in Piano 2 before selecting the palette item, but that didn't work. Is there something in Inspector that would correct this?

Your problem arises because you are (ab)using a tempo text for the rit. marking. Currently tempo texts only appear above the top stave, although there are proposals in the works to make this more flexible. So, even though you tried to add it to Piano 2, it actually shows up above piano 1.

I suggest that you should replace the existing "rit" markings with stave text which can be added to whichever staves you want. Alternatively you could edit a text line from the lines pallet and then add it to the pallet for re-use.

To get the rit. effect on playback you can add real tempo markings to one stave only and make them invisible. You could also make use of the TempoChanges plugin https://musescore.org/en/project/tempochanges.

"X" works on any staff, moves an element from above to below or vice versa.

Probably in dragging you accidentally dragged the marking from one staff to the other, and MsueScore added space to prevent it from overlapping, not having any way of knowing that you actually intended it to move from one staff to the other. Better to add it to the proper staff to begin with rather than add to one then drag to another.

If elements are overlaying each other, that suggests you are probably disabling autplace, which is designed to prevent that. Dragging an element from one side of a staff to another can do that. But it's also possible the special "single page" mode doesn't always add extra space - that sort of thing is done more in the normal page mode.

Note that dragging is seldom a good way to do anything in MuseScore. For adding elements from the palette, simply select the note/rest you want to add to, then just click the palette element. For moving from one side of the staff to another, use "X". For other adjustments, the cursor keys or Inspector are more precise.

If you continue to have trouble, please attach the actual score and precise steps to reproduce the problem, so we can understand and assist better.
