Can "Offset" settings in score be transferred to parts?

• Jul 3, 2018 - 20:06

I'm doing a full orchestra score that have a number of items offset to avoid visual overlaps. An example would be a whole note that contains a dynamic and hairpin where the beginning of the hairpin overlaps with the dynamic. I have offset the hairpin to avoid the overlap but when the part is extracted, the offsets are reset to the default. Is there a way to retain the offsets when extracting? If not, what is the best way to avoid having to go into every part and move each individual item that needs to be offset?

Offsets are not extracted to parts. If every dynamic is in a bad spot, you can change the style of dynamics and apply to all parts to get things better, but you will still need to adjust the hairpins so they don't end up on top of dynamics. When version 3.0 eventually comes out these collisions should be few and far between.

There are too many variables that change the layout of the part vs. the score.

Examples:

In the score there will be instruments with many measures of rest, for those instruments' parts they will have multi measure rests;

In the score, the Tuba part may have a whole note in several measures in a row while the flute has a measure full of 16th notes, or worse yet 24 16th notes made by 8th note triplets like the one I'm working on right now. Far more whole note measures will fit on the Tuba part than on the flute part in this example.

In the score it is often necessary to ensure the staves are closer together to assure a system will fit on a page. When the parts are extracted, the staves are farther apart to make it easier for the musician to read the music.

There are probably some other differences that I'm not thinking about off the top of my head, but I hope you see the reason offsets are not passed between the parts and score.

Indeed, there will be many cases where the same offsets just won't make sense. But also, many where they would. Eventually I hope to see us implement a better strategy for managing this, to sync what makes sense and provide overrides for the exceptions. rather than not linking things just because they might not make sense to link.

The things I can think of right away that would need to have the offsets retained are:
Dynamics overlapping notes, stems, or flags
Dynamics overlapping hairpins
Hairpins overlapping notes, stems, or flags
Techniques that are placed under a staff (espressivo, etc.)

Except the techniques, everything you list is supposed to automatically be fixed in the score in version 3.0 when it comes out. Hopefully that is the next version (2.3.1 was released today).

Techniques can be passed from score the parts if you edit the Technique style before extracting parts. Some scores have techniques above the staff, others put it below the staff. BTW, if you don't know, enter the Technique as a Staff Text and then change the style to Technique in the inspector (F8). Selected it and then use the drop down in the inspector.
