Which instruments were you trying to add? Is this with MDL 1.0 or 1.1?
Also, can you try opening one of the templates with a large number of instruments that are mixed MuseScore_General + MDL (example: MDL Marching Band (FULL) to see if behavior is same if changing instruments from template?
Happens to me as well, I'm using Musescore 2.3.2 (OS: Windows , Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (32-bit): 2.3.2, revision: b027a16), along with MDL 1.1. I tried to add MDL Snareline, Tenorline, Bassline (5), and Cymbals. If you'd like, I can attach a score. However, I was not using the MDL templates.
Another thing to note: The score's mixer has very many channels, since I used a large number of instrument changes. This made the score really slow to begin with.
This is a duplicate of #274157: Crash when opening score with more than 64 channels using Zerberus
It's fixed in master, but not in 2.3.2. I will apply the same fix. Note that it will not crash but it's not guaranteed to work as expected. Zerberus cannot work with channel number > 64, it's an hardcoded limitation and it shares the channel number with Fluid.

Only in master aka 3.0-dev or also in 2.3.x?

Can you attach a score and give precise step by step instructions to reproduce the problem?

When I do this, it crashes almost instantly.

Confirmed (see attached log), though I don't know if it's necessary to drag?
I hope the title is better, but feel free to refine.
Using MuseScore 2.3.1 and 2.3.2 Beta b29ceb8 (3.0 Nightly 528d043 seems fine) - Mac 10.11.6.
