Online score not looking like the score in Musescore

• Sep 16, 2018 - 21:58

Hey all,

I just started to share scores online for our acapella quintett. It worked perfectly with the first score, but not with the second. Here's what it looks l ike in Musecore:

And here how it looks online:

Is there anything special I need to do to a score before sharing it online?

Any help appreciated,

My first guess is that you made the first score before version 2.3.2 was released and you have not upgraded to version 2.3.2. When 2.3.2 was released, the score engine for MuseScore.com was upgraded to this version. Apparently, it displays the dynamic lines slightly differently.

There are two things you can do to prevent these differences even if you have upgraded to version 2.3.2.

First, don't adjust the location of anything until you are in page view mode, changing from continuous to page view leads to items moving around. You need to make the changes in Page Mode view because that's what MuseScore.com uses.

Second, use proper techniques to adjust dynamics lines. Click the first note affected by the line, then shift+ or ctrl+ click the last note affected by the line, then apply the line. You can then fine tune it by double clicking and dragging end points in page view so it doesn't roam around the page as in the second picture. Never drag the endpoint across a system or page break.

Most of this is good standard practice. I am unable to give any better explanation since I do note have access to any of the actual scores so I can see what you actually did. For more specific help, click reply below this message and then click the "Choose a file" button that will appear and attach your .mscz file.

Mike, thanks for taking the time to answer. Both scores were made with Musescore 2.3.2. And I never used continuous view, it's page view all the time for me.

I did create the lines as you described. Did so for the two scores I uploaded. All is fine for the first score i did, but not for the second one. I have not done anything different, that's why I'm so surprised it doesn't look like in the app.

I can send you the file if you want to take a closer look at the score.

With what you told me, there must be something else different between the score that looks nice and the one here. One thing that stands out is that the first system has an automatic break after the third measure.

There are a few things I can think of that would lead to different views on MuseScore.com:
If you used { to decrease the width of measures on the first one it would explain the difference.
If you used different templates, they could have different settings in either the Page Settings under Layout or the General settings under Style.
Another possibility is that the measures with the eighth notes are wider than the one in the other song because they have fewer notes in them. This also affects the width of measures.

I suggest that you look at the settings in the two scores to see what the difference is. That's all I could do for you.

I also suggest that you use https://musescore.com/groups/improving-musescore-com to contact MuseScore.com since they know what settings are used in displaying files online. They can look at your score that does not look right and tell you how to fix it.

I, like most people on these forums, are only a MuseScore user like you. If you get an answer from MuseScore.com, giving a summary of what the say, or a link to their reply would help others understand what needs to be done in the future.

Best I can tell from the pictures is that you used a non-standard font for text, and musescore.com doens't have that font so it substituted another that is slightly wider, thus changing measure widths and thus affecting how many measures fit per system.

If you need the preserve the exact layout between your computer and musescore.com, you need to stick to standard fonts. There is an FAQ on musescore.com listing the fonts that are currently installed, but really, that's just on musescore.com, and you'll run into the same problem if someone wants to view the score on their own system via the mobile app or after downloading, so I wouldn't even use those font. Just stick with the defaults if you want to maximize compatibility.
